The college offers a range of A-Level and vocational courses with a long-standing history of providing high quality teaching and an incredible range of opportunities for students.

Academic performance

Ashton Sixth Form College is the highest Ofsted rated institution in Tameside (post-16 provider) with an 'Outstanding' rating, as of February 2020. The college previously maintained its ‘Good’ rating for eight years.[2] In 2018-19, 38 courses at the college achieved 100% pass rates with 70% high grades achieved (A*-B or equivalent).[3]

In January 2020, the Department for Education rated Ashton Sixth Form College as the best performing college in Tameside for the fourth year running, the fourth-best college in Greater Manchester and amongst the very best colleges in the North West.[4]

History

The building opened in 1928 as the co-educational Ashton-under-Lyne Grammar School. It had around 600 boys and girls in the 1960s, and 800 in the early 1970s, and 950 by the time it closed with 250 in the sixth form. It was run by Lancashire Education Committee until 1974, then Tameside Metropolitan Borough.

Sixth Form College

It became a sixth form college in 1980 when most schools in Tameside became 11–16 schools.

Admissions

The majority of the college's intake come from within the Tameside area. Students from out of area do choose to travel to the college as their choice of A-Level or Vocational provision. Courses offered by the college include A-levels, AGCEs, BTECs, Certificates and Diplomas.

Ashton Sixth Form College is situated on Darnton Road just off Mossley Road (A670) near the junction with Queen's Road (B6194). The college is in close proximity to Tameside General Hospital.

Higher Education and Adult Skills

Ashton Sixth Form College also has a Higher Education and Adult Skills offer covering a range of part-time and full-time adult and university courses.
