Background and release

Back in Baby's Arms consisted of twelve tracks, all of which were cover versions of songs previously recorded as country music hits. The album included cover versions of Patsy Cline's "Back in Baby's Arms", Brenda Lee's "Fool #1", and Connie Francis's "The Wedding Cake". The album also included a cover version of the religious standard "How Great Thou Art". During this period of time, Smith was beginning to record more Gospel music material. Allmusic reviewer Dan Cooper stated about Smith's version of the song, "If any Thomas ever doubted Smith's religious convictions (which are as much a part of her story as her voice is) one listen to this LP's "How Great Thou Art" should take care of that mistrust." The album was reviewed by the website and received four and a half out of five stars.[2] No singles were released from Back in Baby's Arms. However, the album itself reached a peak position on the American albums charts. Upon its release in 1969, Back in Baby's Arms reached a peak of #12 on the Billboard Magazine Top Country Albums chart.[3] In 1980 "Back in Baby's Arms" was part of the soundtrack for the Loretta Lynn biopic Coal Miner's Daughter and was sung by Beverly D'Angelo who was portraying Patsy Cline and Sissy Spacek who was portraying Loretta Lynn.
