Banat of Craiova

The Banat of Craiova or Banat of Krajowa (German: Banat von Krajowa; Romanian: Banatul Craiovei)[1] was a province of the Habsburg Monarchy.[2][3] It was created after the country obtained Oltenia (the western part of Wallachia) in 1718 after a war with the Ottoman Empire. Through this war, the Habsburg Monarchy also conquered Banat and Serbia. Nevertheless, Habsburg rule over Oltenia only lasted two decades. It ended in 1739, when the Ottoman Empire recovered Serbia and Oltenia (which was returned to Wallachia) after the Treaty of Belgrade. Banat was kept by the Habsburg Monarchy and its successors until 1918.[4]
