History

BAI was created on November 14, 1996, due to the willing of a group of Angolan citizens to actively participate in the financial system of Angola.

BAI arose as an investment bank, which over time began to have a more comprehensive and universal role, given its dynamics and interaction with the socio-economic environment.

It started its activity with six employees (shareholders) who initially worked in a room at the Hotel Trópico in Luanda. The first President was Mr Aguinaldo Jaime, from November 1997 to May 1999. The Bank was originally linked to the private sector. The purpose of its mentors was the desire to do things differently and to actively participate in the country's economic life. It involved entrepreneurs and companies from various areas, in particular, the civil construction, operating in Angola.

BAI was the first Angolan bank with private capital created after Angola's independence and the first to become international. It pioneered the introduction of internet banking and mobile banking technologies with BAI Directo, as well as the introduction of international brand credit cards in Angola.

BAI is a pioneer in the adoption of technology-based solutions, and it was the first bank to adopt and issue the Multicaixa card, and more recently it stood out for the implementation of a mobile money solution (e-Kwanza) and for the implementation of automatic deposit machines, to reduce the waiting time for customers to deposit funds in their accounts in a safe and quick manner.

The Bank was distinguished on several occasions as the best Bank in Angola, namely in 2008 and 2009 by The Banker magazine, and in 2013, 2016 and 2017 by Euromoney.
