First Robotics Competition

Since 2012, Becker High School has competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).[2] FRC Team 4607 - The Coalition of Independent Students (CIS) has been successful during its first two seasons, qualifying for two MSHSL berths in its first two years.[3] Their first year saw them winning the Minnesota State Championship, their second year saw them finishing as the Minnesota State Tournaments' Runners-up.

In its first season, Team 4607 CIS won the North Star Regional to confirm a bid to the FRC World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. CIS 4607 was also named 'Rookie All-Star' at the North Star Regional and the team's Safety Captain won All-Star there as well.[4]

The team competed in the Second MSHSL Robotics Tournament, where it contended against a field of 30 other teams at the Williams Arena. Team 4607 CIS won the State Tournament to give Becker its 3rd team State Championship in Becker School history.[5]

The 2014 FRC campaign saw the CIS team compete again at the North Star Regional against 60 other teams from 4 states. This year's robot (Liberty Xcelerator 2.0-GUMDROP) was a vast improvement in terms of offensive prowess over the previous year's robot. The team finished 15th after the qualifying rounds and was awarded a berth into an alliance with FRC Teams 2175 and 967. The alliance posted a Quarterfinal win before being eliminated by the eventual champions.[6]

The 2014 team defended their 2013 State Title. After the qualification rounds, FRC 4607 was ranked #2 behind 'The Fighting Calculators'- FRC 2175. During the Alliance Selection process, FRC 2175 chose FRC 2052 to the #1 Alliance. CIS would go into this Elimination without the Calculators for the first time.[7] CIS chose FRC team 3018, the Nordic Storm from St. Peter and FRC 2530 'Inconceivable' from Rochester. Both the #1 Alliance and the #2 Alliance headed by FRC 4607 weeded through the competition. When the two alliances met in the finals, it was determined that there would be a two-time state champion - either the FRC Teams of 2175 and 2052 from the #1 Alliance would repeat, or FRC 4607 would repeat. After two matches, the #1 Alliance prevailed - CIS would be bringing home hardware - just not a match set.[7]

Theater

The school is home to an active theater department and in addition to one and three-act plays the school has produced an annual musical theatre production since 2006. Past shows include Fiddler on the Roof (2006),[8] Bye Bye Birdie (2007),[9] Guys and Dolls (2008),[10] Oklahoma! (2009),[11] Grease (2010),[12] The Sound of Music (2012)[13] How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (2012).[14]
