Bengal Sultanate–Kamata Kingdom War

The Bengal Sultanate–Kamata Kingdom War was a conflict between the Bengal Sultanate and the Kamata Kingdom during the late 15th century.[2] The war marked an attempt to expand Bengali rule into the Assam region. The attempt ended when Hussein Shah's son and governor and his entire administration was exterminated by the Baro Bhuyans of Assam,[3] before Vishwa Singha eventually established the Koch dynasty in 1515.

Invasion

After assuming the throne, Alauddin Hussain Shah, the Sultan of Bengal, led his army to invade Assam in 1498. The invasion force included cavalry, infantry and a war flotilla.[4] The Bengal forces besieged the Kamatapur fort and destroyed the city. Hussain Shah defeated Nilambar of Kamata and ended the reign of the Khen dynasty. Though Kamatapur fell in 1498, Hussain Shah was able to annex up to Hajo not before 1502.[5][6]

Aftermath

The region was brought under the administration of Bengali governors in Hajo. Hussain Shah minted coins with the proclamation "conqueror of Kamrupa, Kamata, Jajnagar and Orissa".[7] His governor and son Danial fell to the Baro Bhuyans within Hussein Shah's lifetime.
