Hill was the landlord of the Bull Inn public house in Bull Lane.[5] He was renowned as the "greatest wit" in the City of Gloucester, and was said to consume 28 pints of his home-brewed beer each day.[6]

He was one of the witnesses that exposed the perjury of the Italian valet Teodoro Maiocchi during the trial of Queen Caroline in claiming that he had never visited England before.[7][8]

On 8 July 1813, he was appointed a freeman of the City of Gloucester during the mayorship of Edward Weaver.[2]

Death

Hill died in Gloucester on 31 October 1841 at the age of 54.[6][9]
