Berniece Baker Miracle

Berniece Baker Miracle (born July 30, 1919) is an American centenarian, writer, and the half-sister of actress Marilyn Monroe. She wrote her memoir My Sister Marilyn about Monroe's life and career.

Childhood

Berniece Inez Gladys Baker was born in Venice, California in July 1919. Her parents, Gladys Pearl Baker and Jasper Newton "Jap" Baker (1886–1951), were married in 1917 and had their first child in 1918, older brother Robert Kermit "Jackie". Following Gladys' divorce, Jasper kidnapped the children and raised them in his native Kentucky.[1] Remarried, Gladys gave birth to her third and final child in 1926, Norma Jean Baker.[2]

In 1933, Berniece's brother died from kidney failure.[3] Two years later, she attended Pineville High School and married Paris Miracle (1918–1990) on October 7, 1938.[4] Their only child, Mona Rae Miracle, was born on July 18, 1939.

Later life

During her pregnancy, Miracle received a letter from her mother, informing her of Norma-Jean.[5][6] The two half-sisters met in 1944, after exchanging letters and pictures.[7] Following Norma Jean's rise to fame and turn into Marilyn Monroe, Miracle stayed in touch with her half-sister, who died in 1962 and left her $10,000 in her final will.[8][9][10] Along with Monroe's ex-husband Joe DiMaggio and her business manager Inez Melson, Miracle arranged her funeral, choosing her casket and dress.[11] In an interview with ina.fr, she stated:[12]

"I don't think she committed suicide. It could have been an accident, because I had just talked to her a short time before. She told me what she had planned to do, she had just bought a new house and she was working on the curtains of the windows. She had so many things to look forward to and she was so happy."

Apart from this, she has mostly shunned the media. Throughout her life, Miracle worked as a manufacturing inspector, book keeper and costume designer. She turned 100 in July 2019.[13] Today, Miracle lives retired in Gainesville and remains one of the last living people to have known Monroe intimately.

My Sister Marilyn

My Sister Marilyn: A Memoir Of Marilyn Monroe was published on June 1, 1994, on Monroe's birthday and fifty years after the half-sisters met for first time. Written by her daughter Mona, Miracle co-authors the story of her rare meet-ups with Monroe, up until her death.[14][15] She also addresses the mental issues of their mother Gladys, and the sisters’ consequently troubling childhoods, both lacking of a mother figure:[16]

"We share the same mother, who early in our lives was diagnosed as mentally ill. We grew up feeling abandoned and, though both of us were told we were pretty and talented, we still needed courage and strength. We got that from each other."

The memoir features many exclusive photographs and remains the only authorised biography of Monroe's family. It received positive reviews by outlets such as Entertainment Weekly, who wrote, "[...]this portrait of Marilyn is irreplaceable."[17][18]
