DBAG Class 483

The Class 483 and Class 484 are electric multiple unit (EMU) Train types on order by Deutsche Bahn for use on the Berlin S-Bahn system. They are scheduled to enter service in 2021.

Formation

The Class 483 are "quarter trains". Each train consists of two cars, with a driving cab at each end. The Class 484 are "half trains". Each train consists of four cars with a driving cab at each end.[1][3]

These trains can be coupled together to form trains of 2, 4, 6 or 8 cars in length depending on the service requirements. Like the older Class 480, the Class 483 can operate on its own as a 2-car "quarter train" since it has a driving cab at each end. The Class 481 only has a driving cab at one end, so the minimum train length is 4 cars.

The 483 and 484 have new accessibility features that aren't present on the older S-Bahn trains. These include:

  • New door alarms that sound on opening and closing.
  • External doors painted black to contrast with the body colour, making them easy for visually impaired passengers to find.
  • New tactile door opening buttons that light up and have raised iconography.

The seats on the 483 and 484 are mostly transverse, except for the multi-purpose areas that can be used for wheelchairs and bicycles. These areas feature longitudional flip-up seats.

The interior features air conditioning and multipurpose areas.[4]

Technical specifications

The aluminium bodyshells are built in Szolnok, with the final assembly taking place in Berlin. The bogies are derived from the Oslo Metro MX3000 trains.[5] In order to comply with regulations aiding the visually impaired, the doors are black as a contrast to the train's sides.[6]

History

DB Regio subsidiary S-Bahn Berlin awarded a contract for the construction of 85 four-car and 21 two-car trains to a consortium of Stadler and Siemens in December 2015.[7] A mock-up of the train was presented in October 2016,[8] and the first completed Class 484 train was rolled out on June 27, 2018.[9]

The trains are tested at the Test- and Validationcenter Wegberg-Wildenrath, with the first of five sets to be tested in Wegberg-Wildenrath arriving in late 2018.[5] Trial runs on the Berlin S-Bahn network started in September 2019.[1] Entry into service in scheduled for January 2021.[5]
