Duncan created a YouTube channel in March 2014, starting with skateboarding videos. He moved to California in 2015 to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.[2] In 2016, he created his merchandise brand Dannyduncan69,[3] which became his main source of revenue. Duncan later went on to partner with Zumiez,[4] which further increased the popularity of his merchandise.

Early life

Duncan was born in Englewood, Florida. Originally working at Walgreens, Duncan later worked as a personal trainer for skaters while also making YouTube videos. He was then referred to Jason Lee, who saw potential in Duncan. Lee told Duncan to build up a following on social media to have a higher chance at getting acting roles. Duncan then created an Instagram account in 2014, posting numerous videos and pictures on skating and comedy. His content was heavily inspired by Bam Margera and Jackass.[1]

Career

Duncan's first public upload to his YouTube channel was on July 3, 2014, a skateboarding video.[5] Shortly after, he began to upload stunt and prank videos, as well as eating challenges. His first video to gain traction, "Going Down Stairs On A Hoverboard", was posted in December 2015.[6] Since then, his content has mainly consisted of prank and comedic lifestyle videos on the platform. In June 2016, Duncan gained further exposure upon uploading "Falling With 30,000 Pennies", another viral video on his channel, garnering over 30 million views. In November 2016, Duncan created the "Gary Winthorpe" character. Gary Winthorpe would soon be Duncan's alter ego, owning an Instagram handle with over 500 thousand followers.[7]

In 2019, Duncan partnered with the American clothing store Zumiez.

Personal life

Duncan advocates being sober and has refrained from consuming any alcohol or drugs since high school.[8]
