History
DeKalb School of the Arts began in 1985 under the direction of Richard Leitgeb and became the DeKalb Center for Performing Arts, a magnet program housed at Avondale High School. In 1999 it was split off and became the DeKalb School of the Arts, and in 2002 it moved into the former Briarcliff High School. After eight years at its independent location, DeKalb School of the Arts moved back into Avondale High School in August 2010. Since the closure of Avondale High School in 2011, DSA has occupied most of its old campus, sharing it with the DeKalb County School District's Registration and Records departments. In the winter of 2020 the school district abruptly decided to drop the eighth grade class from DSA. Starting in August 2021 the school will only have grades 9-12.
Staff
George Greene, a previous assistant principal, is the current principal.[4] The previous principal, Susan McCauley, abruptly retired after an episode involving failure to report alleged "inappropriate contact" between a teacher and student.[5] Another staff issue during McCauley's tenure involved a French teacher who was transferred after he showed an "inappropriate" video to students.[6] McCauley then hired as a substitute a French teacher who had been forced to resign earlier in the school year from Cross Keys High School for making anti-immigration remarks to Hispanic students.[7]
Academic achievements
The school has won many awards and recognitions, including being named a National Blue Ribbon School.
Its mock trial team has consistently received four or more best attorney/witness awards at competitions and won the Regional Championship in 2013 and 2014.
