{{Portal|Mississippi}Information taken directly from} Mississippi Department of Archives and History Deovolente, Mississippi located six miles northeast of Belzoni and established about 1865, this Negro Settlement was given a Latin name Deovolente, meaning God Willing. John Ervin was the first to settle here, coming soon after the Civil War, but the original founder of the settlement was John Perkins from Ohio. Perkins was soon joined by James Waring also of Ohio, who took over as leader of the settlement. These two men soon had five thousand acres between them and the settlement boasted a post office, gin, school and church. A telephone exchange was installed and was connected to the Cumberland Telephone Company. (This information is provided by The Mississippi Department of Archives and History) The community Deovolente still exists today. There are two churches Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and Mt. Arrat Methodist.
