Distant is an upcoming American science fiction comedy-drama film[1][2] directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon from a spec script by Spenser Cohen. Produced by Amblin Entertainment, the film stars Anthony Ramos, Naomi Scott, and Kristofer Hivju.

Premise

Distant tells the story of an asteroid miner who, after crash-landing on an alien planet, must contend with the challenges of his new surroundings, while making his way across the harsh terrain to the only other survivor – a woman who is trapped in her escape pod.

On February 21, 2019, Amblin Partners revealed that they had picked up a film titled Distant from a spec script by Spenser Cohen.[3] On August 22, 2019, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Will Speck and Josh Gordon would co-direct the film, and that Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger, Anna Halberg, and Kevin Vafi would produce.[4]

Anthony Ramos was cast in the leading role of Distant on December 18, 2019,[1][5] with Rachel Brosnahan joining the following year on February 26.[6][7] However, Brosnahan was later replaced by Naomi Scott on August 4, due to scheduling conflicts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.[8][9] Kristofer Hivju joined the cast on October 5, 2020.[10][11]

Distant began filming in Budapest, Hungary, on September 21, 2020,[12] during the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, the film's crew had to follow COVID-19 protocols and safety measures, such as wearing masks while working, practicing social distancing, participating in frequent testing for the virus, and following "extensive sanitization" procedures during shoots.[13] On November 13, 2020, director of photography Jeff Cutter announced that filming had concluded.[14]
