History

On September 15, 2020 former five time Stanley Cup winner Dr. Randy Gregg of Baseball Edmonton announced the founding of the Edmonton Riverhawks franchise. Baseball Edmonton headed by Gregg, Dale Wishewan, and D’Arcy Durand along with twenty-four shareholders had secured a West Coast League expansion franchise to begin play in 2021.[1] Edmonton's entry into the West Coast League will be the first to be located in Alberta. Due to the distance between the Riverhawks and their league brethren the franchise will subsidize travel to teams visiting Edmonton.

Baseball Edmonton beat out the Edmonton Prospects of the Western Canadian Baseball League to secure a lease agreement with the City of Edmonton for RE/MAX Field.[2] The Riverhawks were awarded a ten-year lease on the former Triple-A stadium. Baseball Edmonton agreed to fund upgrades to the ballpark including new artificial turf, scoreboard, and lighting.[3]
