ElDorado National

ElDorado National is an American bus manufacturer that refers to two distinct corporations following a partial acquisition by Forest River in 2020. Heavy-duty transit buses are built by ENC (formerly ElDorado National–California) in Riverside, California, owned by REV Group. Cutaway buses and mobility vans are built by ElDorado (formerly ElDorado National–Kansas) in Salina, Kansas, owned by Forest River.

Predecessor companies Honorbuilt Manufacturing (founded in Kansas in 1960, which later became El Dorado Recreational Vehicles in 1978) and National Coach (founded in 1976 in California) were separately acquired by Thor Industries in 1988 and 1991, respectively, then combined as ElDorado National. The recreational vehicle portion of Honorbuilt/ElDorado Motors was not part of the Thor purchase. As ElDorado National, it was one of the largest manufacturers of light-duty and mid-size buses for the airport/hotel/rental car shuttle bus markets. Under Thor, ElDorado National, which had previously sold buses to local transit operators with smaller fleets, began marketing and selling vehicles for the heavy-duty transit market and major fleet operators, particularly the full-size Axess transit and shuttle bus.

Thor Industries sold its entire vehicle operations, including ElDorado National, to Allied Specialty Vehicles in 2013. Allied Specialty Vehicles was renamed REV Group in 2015, and the transit and shuttle bus operations of ElDorado National were made more distinct with the separate brands ENC and ElDorado, respectively, in 2016. With the partial acquisition of the Kansas-based ElDorado factory and brand by Forest River in 2020, the companies are again separate organizations.

History

Honorbuilt Manufacturing was founded in 1960 by Bob Stewart to manufacture recreational campers under license in Minneapolis, Kansas.[1][2] By 1964, the Honorbuilt Trailer Manufacturing Co. was producing the most popular pickup truck camper bed insert in the United States, branded as the "El Dorado coach".[3] Honorbuilt was acquired by Ohio-based Ward Manufacturing in November 1965 and continued operations as the Honorbuilt Division,[4][5] adding "Nimrod" trucks and coaches to its product lineup shortly after acquisition, which required an expansion to the Minneapolis plant.[6] Stewart bought out the last of his partners in 1978 and incorporated as El Dorado R.V., Inc.;[1][7] the company subsequently entered the commercial bus market in 1979 or 1980, offering cutaway minibuses under the "Falcon" brand.[1][8]

In 1983, the company was renamed as the ElDorado Motor Corporation to reflect its diversified offerings, and made an initial public offering in January 1984.[1] ElDorado Motors lost $5 million in 1988 due to decreased demand for recreational vehicles and sold its commercial bus operations to Thor Industries in 1988 to stave off bankruptcy.[9] Thor took the ElDorado bus division, which was based in Salina, Kansas, and went on to combine it with National Coach, acquired in 1991;[10][11] the two began operating as ElDorado National–Kansas and ElDorado National–California, respectively.[12]

National Coach Corporation had been founded in 1976 by William Feldman in Gardena, California, later expanding with a second factory in Chino in 1984,[13] as a recreational vehicle and mid-size bus manufacturer best known for developing the Escort, a shuttle bus used by airport car rental agencies and hotels,[14] and the Landmark line of conversion vans.[15] National Coach also operated in Carson.[14]

The sale of the commercial bus division was not sufficient and ElDorado Motors filed for bankruptcy in March 1989.[16][17] The recreational vehicle portion of ElDorado Motors continued in Minneapolis and was reorganized as Honorbuilt Industries, Inc. in 1990.[18] With the help of a consortium of private investors and a federal loan,[19][20] Honorbuilt resumed production of ElDorado-branded recreational vehicles in October 1990 at its Minneapolis factory;[21] production lasted until 1996, when Honorbuilt was acquired by SMC Corporation and the plant was closed.[22][23] The RV firm, renamed to SMC Midwest as a wholly-owned subsidiary, ceased operations in 1997, although it still existed as a legal entity.[24]

ElDorado National broke ground in June 2003 on a new manufacturing site in Riverside, California, more than doubling factory floor space to 200,000 sq ft (19,000 m2).[25] ElDorado National–Kansas acquired Krystal Enterprises, a builder of luxury cutaway buses, in October 2012.[26][27]

Thor sold ElDorado National to Allied Specialty Vehicles (ASV) when it divested its bus business in August 2013.[28][29] Other brands included in the sale were Champion Bus, General Coach America, and Goshen Coach.[30] Allied Specialty Vehicles changed its name to REV Group in November 2015.[31] In March 2016, both ElDorado National–California and ElDorado National–Kansas unveiled new logos to distinguish their operations; the Kansas-based manufacturer of light- and medium-duty cutaways was rebranded to ElDorado, while the California-based transit bus manufacturer was rebranded to ENC.[32][33]

In May 2020, REV Group sold its light- and medium-duty shuttle bus businesses (including ElDorado National–Kansas) to Forest River,[34][35] but retained the heavy-duty transit and school bus businesses and brands, including ElDorado National–California (ENC) and Collins Bus.[36]

Generally, the light and medium-duty cutaway and shuttle buses are produced by ElDorado National–Kansas, while heavy-duty transit buses are produced by ElDorado National–California.
