System overview

EllaLink is a optical platform offering secure high capacity connectivity on a low latency transatlantic route (<60 ms round-trip delay time between Portugal and Brazil), linking major terrestrial and subsea hubs in Europe and Latin America.[2] EllaLink is a privately funded and independent company committed to providing services on a Carrier Neutral, Open Access basis.

EllaLink will provide telecoms connectivity between Europe and Latin America connecting key financial centres, major data centres and the key population's areas. EllaLink will be ready for service at the end of 2020, providing the first-ever direct fibers between the two continents with a point of presence in Sines, Madrid, Lisbon, Marseille, Barcelona, Fortaleza, São Paulo and Rio and onward connectivity to the USA, Europe, Asia, and Africa and the Middle East.

History

2012

EllaLink was formed[3]

EllaLink’s mission is to deploy and operate a next-generation submarine cable system on a unique route between Latin America and Europe. Direct fiber pairs provide a low latency path giving a solid foundation upon which Carriers, Operators & Internet Content Providers can develop competitive offerings. EllaLink’s business model is built on their commitment to provide Products & Services on Carrier Neutral, Open and Independent basis.

2015

EllaLink project commenced[4]

EllaLink is a state-of-the-art Submarine Cable System connecting Latin America and Europe, linking the major hubs of São Paulo and Fortaleza with Lisbon and Madrid.

2017

Supply Contract awarded to Alcatel Submarine Networks[5]

The system is being built by Alcatel Submarine Networks and will be one of the new generation coherent submarine cables, offering 72 Tbit/s of capacity over four fibre pairs.

2018

Marguerite became the equity sponsor of EllaLink[6]

The pan-European equity fund Marguerite II became the equity sponsor of EllaLink in H1 2018. Anchor customers on the system are, amongst others, the Bella consortium, Cabo Verde Telecom and EMACOM

2019

The manufacturing of the cable has started[7]

Following the coming in to force of the project at the end of 2018, the marine survey is now completed and the manufacturing of the cable has started.
