History
In 1956, Roderick "Scotty" Munro made a presentation to the leaders of the oil booming town of Estevan. His plan was to move his Humboldt/Melfort Indians to the oil capital of Saskatchewan. "The league that we play in is the best junior hockey in the world," he said. Should the citizens of Estevan finance the building of a new arena Scotty would bring top-notch hockey entertainment and much-needed help for minor hockey here.
His pitch was successful and one year later his newly named "Bruins" arrived in Estevan to begin the 1957/58 season in the newly built Agricultural Auditorium.
The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League would have six members. The Estevan Bruins would have to travel eight hundred kilometers to play the 1956/57 Memorial Cup champions, the Flin Flon Bombers, and would make shorter trips to play the Prince Albert Minto's, Regina Pats, Saskatoon Quakers and Melville Millionaires. Thus began many years of highly entertaining hockey featuring many future NHL players. The SJHL thrived and grew to eight teams, adding Weyburn Red Wings and Brandon Wheat Kings until the Canadian Major Junior Hockey league (forerunner of today's WHL[1]) was formed in 1966.
The Bruins continued play in Estevan for five more years. During this time the league changed it name for various political reasons and in 1971, the Bruins moved to New Westminster, British Columbia ending fourteen years of major junior hockey in Estevan.
Summary of League Participation:
Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (1957–1966)
Canadian Major Junior Hockey League (1966–1967)
Western Canada Junior Hockey League (1967–1968)
Western Canada Hockey League (1968–1970)
The Bruins won the league's President's Cup in 1967–68, then won the Abbott Cup that year to become the Junior Champion for Western Canada and compete against the George Richardson Memorial Trophy winning Eastern Champion for the Memorial Cup. The Bruins lost that Memorial Cup competition against the Niagara Falls Flyers.
In 1971 the WHL Bruins moved to New Westminster, British Columbia, where they became the New Westminster Bruins. The franchise moved again in 1981 to become the current WHL Kamloops Blazers.
With the departure of the major junior Bruins, a new Bruins team was founded in Estevan that same year, which has played in the SJHL ever since. The Estevan Bruins won the SJHL championship in 1985 and 1999.
