In 1920, Kansas City, Missouri, the bosses of a Jewish crime organization, The Moskowitz Syndicate, and an Irish gang, The Milligan Concern, trade their sons to the other family as a way of keeping peace. However, Milligan's son, Patrick, betrays his adoptive family, allowing the Irish gang to ambush and kill the Moskowitz Syndicate. Patrick's father then forces him to execute Moskowitz's son. In 1934, the Milligan Concern and the newly arrived Sardinian Fadda Family go through the same peace offering with Patrick Milligan again being exchanged. This time, however, Patrick betrays his Irish family and they are wiped out in a similar ambush by the Faddas. Patrick is then forced to execute his father. In 1949, the African American gang, Cannon Limited, and their leader, Loy Cannon, come to power and, again, trade sons with the Fadda Family. Loy trades his youngest son, Satchel, and Don Donatello Fadda trades his youngest son, Zero. Patrick, who now goes by "Rabbi", empathetically promises Loy he will personally look out for Satchel. One year later, while at a stop sign, Donatello Fadda is accidentally shot in the jugular by children with a BB gun and is rushed to the city's top private hospital. However, the hospital director, Dr. Harvard, is prejudiced against Italians and demands that they leave. Donatello's son, Josto, swears revenge on Harvard. At a lesser quality public hospital, Josto bonds briefly with Donatello's nurse, Oraetta Mayflower. He asks Mayflower to take care of his father for him. Later that afternoon however, Mayflower instead kills Donatello with a morphine injection and steals his ring off his finger. Meanwhile, bright, rebellious, African American teenager Ethelrida Pearl Smutny, whose mixed-race parents are owners of a funeral home, has a conversation with her father Thurman about their family's financial problems. Thurman, for an unknown reason, has accepted a large loan from Loy which he is unable to repay. Unknown to them, Mayflower is watching them from her apartment window across the street and has taken a peculiar interest in Ethelrida.

Ethelrida's aunt, bank robber Zelmare Roulette, and her lover/partner in crime, Swanee Capps, escape from prison and arrive unannounced at the Smutny house. Ethelrida's mother, Dibrell, reluctantly allows her sister and Capps to stay. Josto, who has now assumed control of the Fadda Family following his father's death, finds his legitimacy challenged by his younger brother, Gaetano Fadda. Gaetano refuses to go back to Sardinia following Donatello's funeral and immediately begins undermining his brother's authority. Further adding to his weak appearance, some of Josto's men botch a drive-by hit on Dr. Harvard, instead killing a nurse and a wealthy socialite. Odis Weff, a corrupt cop working for Josto that has numerous nervous tics, warns him to refrain from bringing any more heat on the Family. Meanwhile, Cannon Limited take advantage of Donatello's death. Before he died, Donatello was considering handing over a front disguised as a slaughterhouse to Loy. Loy and his consigliere, Doctor Senator, make a move to claim the slaughterhouse as theirs, claiming the deal had been settled. Doctor Senator and several of Cannon's henchmen forcibly evict the Italians from the slaughterhouse and await Josto's response. However, Gaetano arrives instead of Josto and tells Senator that if he finds the deal was illegitimate, there will be retaliation. Striking up conversation on their porch, Oraetta is impressed with Ethelrida's intelligence and ability to speak French. That night, Oraetta bakes her an apple pie, but laces it with ipecac. She leaves the spiked pie on Ethelrida's front porch and Thurman brings it inside. Unknown to all of them, U.S. Marshal Dick "Deafy" Wickware and Odis have been sitting outside the house with several police officers. Believing Roulette and Capps are inside, they kick the front door open.

Deafy has been trailing Roulette and Capps since their escape and has arrived in Kansas City. He is assigned Odis as his guide around town. The two of them and a squad of police raid the Smutny funeral home. Deafy questions Dibrell on the whereabouts of her sister and Capps, but Dibrell and Ethelrida both claim they haven't seen or heard from them. A search of the house and morgue in the basement yields no results and the police leave. Roulette and Capps, who hid in one of the morgue's cold lockers, promise to leave but take Thurman's shotgun with them. Thurman smuggles them out in a casket and drops them off at their destination. Unknown to Thurman, their destination is Loy's compound and they intend to rob it. Killing three of Loy's henchmen, Roulette and Capps steal $20k. However Swanee, who had eaten Oraetta's poisoned apple pie, becomes violently ill during the robbery and vomits on the money. The two are forced to make a hasty getaway. Oraetta, fired from her previous job for the mysterious deaths of her patients, manages to get a job at Dr. Harvard's hospital. Noticing a scathing Josto outside in his car staring at the hospital, she assumes he is following her for romantic reasons. Entering his car, she gives Josto a line of cocaine and a handjob. Meanwhile, Gaetano has become impatient with Josto's diplomatic approach to the Cannon gang and begins rallying some of the Family to his side, including hitman Constant Calamita. He instructs Calamita to carry out a drive-by hit on Loy's eldest son, Lemuel, and have Rabbi Milligan act as the triggerman. Rabbi, beginning to suspect Josto did not authorize the hit, foils the assassination. Both Lemuel and his newly appointed driver, Leon Bittle, escape unharmed. Loy, confronted with the news of both the robbery and the failed hit on Lemuel, believes Josto is behind both and wants retaliation. Doctor Senator, suspecting something is wrong, convinces Loy to let him investigate the situation before declaring war.

While smuggling a large quantity of rifles in a produce truck, Calamita and his driver are stopped by Loy's gang using a flaming roadblock. They kill the driver and brand Calamita's face before stealing the truck. Loy sells the guns to Mort Kellerman and the Fargo mafia at cost, requesting support from them in the event that they're needed during a war with the Faddas. During a sit down with Fadda consiglieri Ebal Violante, Doctor Senator claims the truck heist was retaliation for the attempted hit on Lemuel. Violante's confusion confirms Senator's suspicions the attempt on Lemuel's life was a power move from Gaetano and the robbery was just a random crime. Rabbi informs Josto of Gaetano's efforts to undermine him. Enraged, Josto confronts Gaetano in front of his followers, threatening to shoot him in the genitals. Gaetano backs off, but is visibly angered. Oraetta, who has begun an intense sexual relationship with Josto, gets interrupted by Ethelrida, who has arrived at her apartment looking for a part-time house cleaning job. While alone in the apartment, Ethelrida discovers Oraetta's secret closet where she keeps various poisons, mementos from her victims, as well as newspaper scraps about her killings. Ethelrida steals a newspaper clipping and Donatello's ring. She leaves in a hurry and forgets her notebook in Oraetta's closet. Roulette meets with Thurman in secret and gives him a bag full of her recently stolen money so he can pay his debt to Loy. Thurman, unaware the money was originally Loy's, arrives at the latter's house, pays his debt, and leaves. Loy is happy something went his way, however he becomes angry when he notices the vomit-like smell of the money and realizes what has happened.

Ethelrida writes an anonymous letter to Dr. Harvard detailing Oreatta and her mysterious findings. Retaliating for the truck heist, Josto has Odis arrest several men in Loy's organization, including Lemuel. When Odis attempts to arrest Loy, he takes advantage of Odis' OCD and turns the tables on him. Odis does not arrest Loy, but instead confiscates the bag of money Thurman gave him. Loy turns his attention to Roulette and Capps. He intimidates Thurman, claiming he knows where the money came from and who robbed him. He demands the whereabouts of Roulette and control of the funeral home as a front. Meanwhile, Deafy interrogates Ethelrida at her school for the same information. Both Loy and Deafy, having separately learned the location of Roulette and Capps, head to the hotel they're hiding out in. Loy gets there first, however, but rather than killing Roulette and Capps, he hires them and sneaks them out of the hotel. Doctor Senator arrives at the diner he and Violante regularly have meetings at, but is surprised to find Gaetano and Calamita there instead. Calamita attempts to threaten Senator, but he rebukes the pair and leaves. Calamita follows Senator outside the diner and shoots him dead in the street.

Loy and his gang ambush Odis in his apartment and force him to flip sides. With his help, Roulette and Capps shoot their way into Gaetano's compound where they manage to subdue him and bring him to Loy. Loy chains Gaetano to the wall and has him tortured. Dr. Harvard brings Ethelrida's anonymous letter to Oraetta's attention. She manages to talk her way out of it, but Dr. Harvard refuses to let her see the note which he places in his desk. Violante returns from New York City with Joe Bulo after requesting backup. New York promises to help Josto but only if he can't fix his problem with Cannon Limited within 2 weeks and has made peace with Gaetano. Violante suggests an exchange with Cannon Limited to get Gaetano back. However, Josto secretly concocts a plan: He orders one of his henchmen, Antoon Dumini, to take Loy's son, Satchel, out and kill him. Loy will, in turn, kill Gaetano. New York will then send Josto his reinforcements and he will be able to take out Cannon Limited. Josto will then have Kansas City to himself, without Gaetano or Loy. Rabbi, however, figures out Josto's plan and kills Antoon before he can execute Satchel. Rabbi and Satchel then escape together.

Oraetta brings Dr. Harvard homemade macaroons and convinces him to try one. Unbeknownst to him, she has poisoned them and while Harvard struggles on the floor, Oraetta steals Ethelrida's anonymous letter from his desk. The Faddas discover Antoon's body and correctly assume Rabbi has betrayed them and intervened. Josto has Calamita leave town and track them down. Josto and Violante arrive at the exchange with Loy. Violante intends to hand over several Fadda businesses to Loy in exchange for Gaetano. However, Josto sabotages the exchange, lying to Loy that Calamita, enraged at Gaetano's abduction, killed Satchel. He changes the deal, offering Violante's promised businesses in exchange for Loy killing Gaetano and Calamita. Emotional, Loy demands the Faddas leave. After mourning overnight and toying with the idea of killing Zero in retaliation, Loy sees the big picture and realizes Josto is setting him up for a trap. Instead, Loy informs Gaetano of his brother's deal and, much to Gaetano's surprise, sets him free. Loy then sends Omie Sparkman to hunt down Calamita.

Oraetta receives news Dr. Harvard has survived his poisoning and is expected to make a full recovery. She hastily begins packing her bags and finds Ethelrida's notebook in her apartment. Comparing the handwriting in the notebook to the anonymous letter she pulled from Harvard's desk, she deduces Ethelrida wrote the letter. Josto arrives at his compound and is horrified to find Gaetano there. Gaetano beats him, but then confesses his admiration for Josto's cunning plan to have him killed. He pledges an oath of loyalty, finally accepting Josto's rule. Learning his plan has backfired and has united the brothers against him, Loy calls in his favor from the Fargo mafia. Deafy pays a visit to Loy's house, requesting information on the whereabouts of Roulette and Capps. He insults Loy and intimidates a confession out of him. Loy begrudgingly tells him Roulette and Capps are scheduled to leave town on the 10pm train to Philadelphia. Deafy assembles a police squad to arrest the pair. Odis, claiming to want a return to his life as a cop and not a crook, accompanies Deafy on his raid. Deafy and his squad descend on the train station. Roulette and Capps make a last stand, resulting in the deaths of many cops and civilians alike. Odis, who is incapacitated by his OCD, finally works up the courage to enter the station, where he finds Deafy has cornered an unarmed Roulette and Capps. However, Odis, under orders from Loy, shoots Deafy dead. He then turns his gun on the girls, killing Capps. Roulette, enraged, manages to push past Odis and escape. While visiting their mother's house, Josto and Gaetano are ambushed by Mort Kellerman and the Fargo mafia. Gaetano manages to single-handedly push them back, however both brothers immediately learn that their mother has been killed in the crossfire.

The episode is presented in black and white and told through the eyes of Omie Sparkman, Rabbi Milligan, and Satchel Cannon. Omie is traveling with a kidnapped member of the Fadda family, Aldo, in the trunk of his car. Based on Aldo's tip, Calamita is traveling in pursuit of Rabbi and Satchel to Liberal, Kansas, where Omie has just arrived. Omie stops at a gas station outside the city, tells the owner he is expecting someone (Calamita) to stop at the station and offers to finish painting the building if he can stay and wait. The owner agrees. As predicted, Calamita eventually shows up. Aldo tries to flee but Omie kills him. One day prior, Rabbi and Satchel arrive at an unusual boarding house in Liberal. Satchel finds a seemingly abandoned Terrier named Rabbit in their room and adopts it while Rabbi goes scrounging for cash. After a day and a half in the boarding house, Rabbi decides they need to leave with what little money he was able to acquire. Satchel asks if he can bring Rabbit, but Rabbi declines. Upset, Satchel tells Rabbi it's his birthday and he was hoping to get a gift. Feeling guilty, Rabbi leaves Satchel and Rabbit alone in the room. As a storm begins to develop overhead, Rabbi travels to the gas station outside of town looking for a candy bar for Satchel. However, upon arrival, Rabbi discovers the owner has been killed. After further investigation, he finds Calamita, who has wounded and cornered Omie. Calamita notices Rabbi and a stand-off ensues. Suddenly, the storm turns into a tornado which sucks up the gas station as well as Omie, Calamita, and Rabbi, killing all three of them. The next morning, Satchel wakes up (the episode now in color) to discover that Rabbi never returned. Armed with Rabbi's gun, he leaves the boarding house with Rabbit and begins walking down the road.

The Cannon Limited and the Fadda Family commit to war. Several months pass and by 1951 the mob violence has gotten out of control. Odis, trying to reclaim his life, arrests Josto, Gaetano, and several others. Loy, who is losing the war, asks Buel's rural cousin and mobster, Happy, for his reluctant help. Happy and Leon betray Loy, making a deal with Josto to end the war by killing Loy and running Cannon Limited closely with the Fadda Family. Odis arrives at his apartment to find it ransacked. He tries to flee, but Josto and Gaetano corner him in his car. Unable to defend himself, Odis accepts his fate as Gaetano shoots him dead. As Gaetano runs away from Odis' car, he trips and falls, discharging his gun which blows off the top of his head. Josto flees the scene. Oraetta, intending to kill Ethelrida and get back Donatello's ring, sneaks into Ethelrida's bedroom with a poison syringe. A ghostly apparition of Theodore Roach appears and scares her. She flees the Smutnys' house and arrives home to find several cops waiting to arrest her based on Dr. Harvard's testimony. Ethelrida arranges a meeting with Loy to make a deal for her family's business. She presents him with Donatello's ring and evidence that he was murdered by Oraetta, claiming it will help him win his war with the Faddas.

Following his meeting with Ethelrida, Loy gives the Smutnys their funeral home back. Josto, drunk after Gaetano's death, vengefully murders his pushy father-in-law, Milvin Gillis, and a recovered Dr. Harvard. Loy meets with Violante and returns both the elder Fadda's ring as well as Zero. The two make a deal to end the war. Loy then has Happy and Leon killed for their betrayal. A hungover Josto is confronted in a Kangaroo court by Violante and the rest of the Fadda operation, who assert Josto has acted outside the interests of the family. Oraetta, who has been bailed out of jail by Violante, claims Josto indirectly ordered her to murder Donatello, saying "take care of him." She also testifies of her and Josto's relationship after. Taking into account Oraetta had Donatello's ring after his passing as well as Gaetano's unexplained death, Violante concludes Josto had conspired with Oraetta to kill his father and brother for more power and declares the Faddas' days as a family business are over. With New York's blessing, Violante takes control of the entire operation, which he intends to modernize. Joe Bulo then drives Josto and Oraetta to a field and executes both of them. Meanwhile, Loy returns home with his family and is overjoyed to discover Satchel has made his way back home. With the war ended, Loy meets with Violante, but is shocked to discover that Violante has made "small adjustments" to their peace deal; alterations that now put half of the Cannon Limited's business in Fadda control. Defeated, Loy returns home, but finds bliss with his family reunited. Lingering outside the door, he is suddenly stabbed by a vengeful Zelmare, angered that Loy had sold her and Swanee out, leading to Swanee's death. Satchel witnesses the murder and comes to his father's side as he dies. The episode ends with Ethelrida reciting her American history report to her proud parents. During the credits, it is revealed that Satchel has grown up to become Mike Milligan, one of the main characters from the second season of the series and a major player in Violante's new, more corporate, Kansas City mafia.

Production

The fourth season was announced in August 2018 and it was confirmed that Chris Rock was cast in the lead role.[14] In July 2019, 12 actors were announced to have been cast, including Francesco Acquaroli, Andrew Bird, Jessie Buckley, Salvatore Esposito, Jeremie Harris, Jack Huston, Amber Midthunder, Jason Schwartzman, and Ben Whishaw.[15] Midthunder ultimately did not appear and her role was recast with Kelsey Asbille for undisclosed reasons. In September 2019, it was announced that Uzo Aduba had been cast in the role of Zelmare Roulette, however, Aduba had to drop out of the role due to "some personal family issues".[16] The role was recast with Karen Aldridge in December.[17]

Production began in October 2019 in Chicago, Illinois, with Hawley directing the first block of episodes.[18] In March 2020, FX suspended production on the series for at least two weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic.[19] The original premiere date of April 19, 2020, was also pushed back due to production delays. The series completed production on eight of the eleven episodes before production shut down.[3] Production resumed in August 2020 and was completed by September 8, 2020.[20][21]

Reception

Critical response

The fourth season has received generally positive reviews from critics, though less acclaimed than previous seasons. On Rotten Tomatoes, the season is "certified fresh" with an 82% critic approval rating and an average score of 7.29 out of 10 based on 49 reviews. The website's critical consensus is, "Though Fargo's ambitious fourth season struggles to maintain momentum, fine performances and a change of scenery make for an engaging – if uneven – departure from the series' norm."[22] On Metacritic, it has a score of 68 out of 100 based on 33 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews."[23]

Matt Zoller Seitz, writing for Vulture, gave the season a negative review. He criticized the writers' missed opportunity to link the season's unique premise of children swapping among gangs to its themes of immigration and culture, as well as their tendency to make subtext obvious through excessive monologues.[24]

Accolades

For the 11th Critics' Choice Television Awards, Chris Rock received a nomination for Best Actor in a Limited Series and Glynn Turman received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series.[25]
