Finchley War Memorial

Finchley War Memorial[1] (IWM Ref:10972) is a World War I monument located in Ballards Lane, North Finchley in the United Kingdom. The Memorial commemorates the 1,000 Finchley residents who died in that war.

History

The Memorial was unveiled by Viscount Lascelles in a ceremony held on 13th November 1925. Thousand of people reportedly attended it. After the ceremony, dignitaries addressed a gathering in the St Kilda Hall. [2]

The subscription cost of the Memorial was £500.[3]

Description

The granite cross of the Memorial is set inside a maintained fenced enclosure. The gates have the words St Kildas on them, named after the Scottish isles of St. Kilda. The bronze sculptured panel contains a carved relief of three servicemen: a soldier in full trench kit, with steel helmet, cape and fixed bayonet flanked by the busts of a sailor and an airman.[4]

An inscription above the Soldier that reads “Victory won by Sacrifice”. A second inscription below the soldier reads“At the Going down of the Sun and in the Morning we will Remember them.”

A flagpole stands behind the cross. Located on the sides of the Memorial are two memorial plaques: the Finchley Metropolitan Tramway War Memorial (18 names), (IWM Ref 64400) and the Hendon Garage War Memorial (52 names), (IWM Ref 64399). These plaques were later relocated to the Memorial after their buildings were demolished.

The names of the deceased are recorded in a book at the Memorial club.No names are inscribed on the Memorial itself.

A Service of Remembrance is held at the Memorial on Remembrance Sunday. There is a wo minutes silence, the Last Post sounds and a procession his held.[5] Ballards Lane is closed for the sevice.
