After the 1970 World Cup, Italian club Juventus wanted to sign him for an estimated $1.5 million, but Nicolae Ceauşescu's communist regime refused.[2]
Career
He was born in Bucharest and debuted in Divizia A with Dinamo București in 1966. He remained with Dinamo for twelve seasons, winning the league titles in 1971, 1973 and 1975 and the cup title in 1968. He became the top goalscorer of the Divizia A in 1969 with 22 goals and in 1971 with 15 goals. During a 1982 UEFA Cup tie against FK Sarajevo, Dumitrache headbutted referee Gianfranco Menegal in the mouth. As a consequence, he was handed the maximum seven year suspension from all UEFA competition.[3][4][5] In 1970, Florea Dumitrache, along with Dinamo teammate Cornel Dinu were nominated for the Ballon d'Or.[6][7]
Dumitrache got 31 caps and 15 goals for the Romanian national team.[8] He represented his country at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, scoring 2 goals.[8]
The Victoria Ground is now known as the "Stadionul Florea Dumitrache" in honor of the great Romanian striker, who played 11 seasons for Dinamo and 7 years for the Romanian National Football Team.
