Gateshead Stadium Metro station

Gateshead Stadium is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the town of Gateshead. It joined the network on 15 November 1981, following the opening of the third phase of the network, between Haymarket and Heworth.

Location

The station was purpose-built for the network and is named after the nearby Gateshead International Stadium. During the planning phase, the station was originally intended to be named Old Fold, after a neighbouring residential area.

Facilities

Step-free access is available at all stations across the Tyne and Wear Metro network, with ramps providing step-free access to platforms at Gateshead Stadium. The station was refurbished in 2015, along with Felling, and is branded in the new black and white corporate colour scheme.[2]

The station is equipped with ticket machines, waiting shelter, seating, next train information displays, timetable posters, and an emergency help point. Ticket machines are able to accept payment with credit and debit card (including contactless payment), notes and coins.[3][4] The station is also fitted with smartcard validators, which feature at all stations across the network.[5][6]

There is no car park at the station. There is the provision for cycle parking, with 2 cycle pods available for use.[7]

Services

As of January 2021, the station is served every 6–15 minutes, with additional trains running at peak times. Trains are currently operating to a reduced timetable, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7]
