Geek & Sundry

Geek & Sundry is a commercial YouTube and Twitch channel and multimedia production company.[1][2] It was launched on April 2, 2012 by actress Felicia Day[3] with Kim Evey and Sheri Bryant[4] as part of YouTube's 100 million dollar original channel initiative. In June 2012, Forbes suggested that "if successful, it could help blaze a trail for the future of network television."[5] In 2014, Geek and Sundry was acquired by Legendary Entertainment and is now a division of Legendary Digital Networks.[6] Day left the company in 2016.[7]

History

Origins

The channel was originally based around three unscripted programs produced by Day: The Flog (hosted by Day), Sword & Laser (hosted by Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt) and Tabletop (hosted by actor Wil Wheaton).[1]

Revenue for the company is undisclosed. Before the channel launch, they were given an advance payment by YouTube "against future advertising revenue to jumpstart production."[1]

The channel's founders and hosts of some of its programs have attended a number of fan conventions since its startup in April 2012 including: ComicCon,[8] Dragon*Con,[9] VidCon,[10] and WonderCon.[11] They also attended Comic-Con in 2013[12] and San Diego Comic-Con in 2014.[13]

In March 2013, the channel announced three new series: Felicia's Ark (featuring Felicia Day), Fetch Quest (created by Jordan Allen-Dutton) and The Player One[s]. Two programs, Tabletop and Space Janitors, were renewed for season 2 of the channel starting April 1, 2013.[14]

Acquisition by Legendary Entertainment

In August 2014, Geek and Sundry was acquired by Legendary Entertainment for an undisclosed sum.[6] In December 2014, Geek & Sundry was listed on New Media Rockstars Top 100 Channels, ranked at #68.[15]

In March 2015, Geek & Sundry launched their Twitch channel with a 48-hour stream in support of The Lupus Foundation.[16] After Day heard about a private Dungeons & Dragons home game from Ashley Johnson, she approached the group about playing it in a live-streamed format for Geek & Sundry;[17][18][19] Critical Role began airing on March 12, 2015,[20] however, the show remained creator-owned.[21]

On January 11, 2016, Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group announced that it concluded an agreement with shareholders to acquire Legendary Entertainment for $3.5 billion.[22] In April 2016, "Geek & Sundry's website had 290,000 uniques [...], per comScore. On YouTube, where it got its start, it has 1.4 million subscribers".[23] In June 2016, Legendary Digital Networks (LDN) announced a new subscription streaming service, Alpha, which would include programming from both Nerdist and Geek & Sundry.[23]

In 2016, Critical Role's spinoff show Talks Machina premiered on Geek & Sundry's Twitch channel; in January 2017, Talks Machina: After Dark premiered on Alpha and included 15-20 minutes of extra cast questions pulled from Alpha viewers.[24][25][26] Season 4 of Wheaton's Tabletop was exclusive to Alpha in 2016 before premiering on Geek & Sundry's YouTube channel in 2017.[27][28][29][30]

In 2016, Felica Day left Geek & Sundry after growing "fatigued in a less creative, more managerial role in the company".[7] Day said "I gave it my heart and my soul. When I realized I had given as much as I could, I needed to move on".[7] In January 2017, it was announced that Thomas Tull, Legendary's founder, had exited as Legendary Entertainment CEO[31] and that Eric Campbell, a writer on Geek & Sundry shows such as The Flog, Felicia’s Ark and Signal Boost!, would become the Director of Development for Geek & Sundry.[32][33] In July 2017, Marisha Ray became the Creative Director of Geek & Sundry.[34]

2018–present

Legendary started to scale back their digital division after "Joshua Grode took over as the company’s CEO in 2018".[35]

In June 2018, Critical Role started to self-produce new shows and content which did not air on Geek & Sundry's channels.[36][37][38] Ray stepped down from her position at Geek & Sundry in June 2018 to become the creative director for Critical Role;[39] Matt Key replaced her as Creative Director of Geek & Sundry.[40] The sets for Critical Role and Talks Machina moved from LDN's studios to Critical Role's own studios in July 2018.[41]

In July 2018, the Star Trek role-playing game (rpg) show Shield of Tomorrow ended; the cast and game master Campbell launched a new superhero rpg show on Geek & Sundry called Callisto 6.[42][43] In September 2018, Vampire: The Masquerade – L.A. By Night premiered on Geek & Sundry as a weekly show; Jason Carl, of White Wolf Entertainment, acted as the Storyteller of the Vampire: The Masquerade Fifth Edition game.[44][45]

In February 2019, Critical Role's split from Geek & Sundry and LDN was completed. Critical Role took over production responsibility of the Critical Role and Talks Machina shows, with live broadcasts of their shows and VODs airing exclusively on Critical Role's channels.[46][47] Jeremy Thomas, for 411Mania, wrote that Critical Role "regularly garners viewership in the tens of thousands each Thursday night. It and its Tuesday discussion show Talks Machina are Geek & Sundry’s most popular shows by far, both on Twitch and Legendary’s Project Alpha".[47] Also in February 2019, the Dungeons & Dragons show Relics and Rarities premiered on Alpha; Deborah Ann Woll was the show's Dungeon Master and the campaign had a celebrity guest each episode.[48][49][50]

On March 5, 2019, Matt Key left Geek & Sundry after the Creative Director position was eliminated.[51] On March 31, 2019, the Alpha service was shutdown; Alpha content, such as Relics and Rarities, became available on Geek & Sundry's YouTube and Twitch channels.[52][53]

In April 2019, Wheaton announced that he was suing Geek & Sundry for breach of contract over distribute deals for Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana which he was not consulted on.[54] Also in April 2019, Campbell left Geek & Sundry after Callisto 6 ended.[55] In May 2019, Woll stated that Relics and Rarities had not yet been picked up for a second seasons and said, "I can say I have written a second season, or at least I’ve outlined it. It’s ready to be fleshed out. Whether or not we get picked up, [...][the cast] will be coming over to my house and playing it, cameras or not".[56] Since December 2019, some older episodes of Critical Role and Talks Machina have been deleted from the Geek and Sundry channels and re-uploaded to the official Critical Role channels, beginning an ongoing migration of older content.[57]:0:45

In late 2019, World of Darkness took over production of Vampire: The Masquerade – L.A. By Night; seasons 1-3 remain archived on the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel while season 4 premiered exclusively on the World of Darkness Twitch channel in 2020.[45] In January 2020, Campbell and the cast of Shield of Tomorrow/Callisto 6 launched a new Star Trek show, Clear Skies, on the Queue Times Twitch channel.[58][59] Campbell stated that Clear Skies is not sequel and that "Shield of Tomorrow is Geek & Sundry‘s (and rightfully so). I had hoped to come back to Shield again, but honestly? We wrapped that story up so well, I love that it will exist forever as a completed campaign. [...] Though you may see many familiar faces, as I was using a lot of established characters from the TV Shows and of course,  Modiphius publications, while running Shield!"[58]

In July 2020, Legendary laid off 30% of the LDN staff.[35][60] Variety reported that "there was a sense that the operations were a money drain on the company’s profitable film and television operations. Those cuts were accelerated by the onset of COVID-19, which has resulted in layoffs and furloughs across the entertainment industry".[35] The Hollywood Reporter reported that "the digital brands have become less important to the strategic direction of Legendary in recent years as the online content business has shifted away from the networks that grew big during the early heyday of YouTube stardom. Legendary Digital is not a moneymaker for the business the way its core film and TV divisions are".[60] Twitch subscription numbers also have declined: in January 2018, there were over 50,000 subscriptions; in January 2019, there were 19,317 subscriptions; and in January 2020, there were 300 subscriptions.[61]
