The school was founded on September 11, 1961, with 33 students.[2] Its original purpose was to deliver a German education to the children of diplomats in the Washington, D.C., area, though as it has grown over the years it has taken on a larger number of other students. The school is partially supported by the German government.

The German International School Washington, D.C. is a bilingual school using German and English. The school offers a challenging college preparatory program, including AP courses.
