Grigol Robakidze University (Georgian: გრიგოლ რობაქიძის სახელობის უნივერსიტეტი [grigol robakidzis saxelobis universiteti])university is established in 1992 in Tbilisi, Georgia. It specialises in Medical i.e. Medicine and dentistry, but also has courses in the social sciences, English and German.[1]

The university was renamed in honor of the Georgian poet and thinker, Grigol Robakidze. It is one of the oldest in nongovernmental (private) High Educational Institutions in Georgia.

History

  • 1992 - The private University “Alma Mater” was established. At that period the lectures were delivered by Akaki Bakradze, Marika Lordkipanidze, Levan Sanikidze, Revaz Mishveladze, Kote Makharadze, Otar Japaridze, Revaz Chogoshvili, Albert Abesadze, Levan Menabde. . .
  • 1994 - American and German professors started delivering lectures in “Alma Mater.”
  • 1995 - By the decision of the Academic Council, the University “Alma Mater” was named Grigol Robakdize University, though society still calls it “Alma Mater”.
  • 1995 - The School of Dentistry was established in the University where a new simulating system was introduced first time in Georgia and the laboratory of simulated techniques was established which is unique and has no equal in Georgia.
  • 1995 - Grigol Robakidze University was included in the catalogue of the world higher educational institutions (among only five higher educational institutions of Georgia).
  • 1996 - The University established the university dentistry clinic (first precedent among private institutions).
  • 1996 - Certification of medical higher educational institutions was held. Grigol Robakidze was among the top ten institutions recognized by the State.
  • 1998 - The computer programme of dentistry studies was worked out on the Dentistry Department the first time in Georgia (the author's right 01/3-3-40).
  • 1999 - The Centre of Debates and Civil Society - the project won the competition of the Fund “Open Society “Georgia.”
  • 2000-2001 – Two audio conferences were held between the Centre for International Development at Harvard University and the Faculty of Business and Management of Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2001 - His Excellency the President of Georgia Mr. Michael Saakashvili (by that time the Minister of Justice) visited the University and met the students and lecturers. The University is proud of his estimation of students and university activities.
  • 2001 - Sunday School for the Development of the Civil Society was established. The project won the competition of the Fund “Open Society “Georgia.”
  • 2001 - Tempus TACIS project of the European Union started accomplishment at Grigol Robakidze University, which intended reconstructing the teaching and learning system according to the European standard.
  • 2001 - Lecturers of the University passed internship at the universities of England and Sweden within the scope of Tempus TACIS Project. Young specialists having received their education in American and European universities started working at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2001 - The University signed the agreement with the American Institute in Prague (Czech Republic). Grigol Robakidze University had the exclusive right to send graduates from the speciality of economics from Georgia to Prague on PhD and MBA programmes free of charge.
  • 2001 - UNIFEM - the project of the United Nations Association “Gender, Conflict and Peace Building” was implemented.  This course is delivered only in several higher educational institutions.
  • 2002 - According to the analysis of UNESCO International Institute of Education Planning Grigol Robakidze University is among the top five higher educational institutions in terms of the employment of graduates.
  • 2002 - On the bais of the agreement signed with the American Institute of Applied Sciences in North Caroline (USA) distance learning educational programme in criminalistics started implementation at Grigol Robakidze University. It considers both certificate and diploma programmes.
  • 2002 - The University established the second university dentistry clinic equipped with modern techniques. By the Minister's order, it is recognized as the state resident base and is given the license for implementing post-diploma education.
  • 2002-2003 - The distance learning programme in accounting was accomplished with Seattle Central Community College (USA).
  • 2003 - The project of the European Union was competed. As a result of monitoring the University received the grade A. Grigol Robakidse University first time in Georgia completely transformed into the European system of teaching and learning and implemented the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
  • 2003 - The project “European Didactics” was implemented.  The project won the competition announced by the Fund “Open Society “Georgia”. Within the scope of the project was published the book (the authors - Professor Mamuka Tavkhelidze, Professor Bela Gomelauri).
  • 2003 - The agreement was signed with Council of International Programs USA (CIPUSA) which considers internship in the United States for 4 months according to specialities. Graduates can also be sent up to 18 months. Salary and accommodation will be provided.
  • 2003 - The University was involved in the international research project of the Economic Forum and Harvard University. Grigol Robakidze University was the only higher educational institution from Georgia involved in the project. It was investigating the tendencies of economic development in the Post Soviet area.
  • 2003 - Grigol Robakidze University was invited to participate in Oxford Round Table. The rector of the University, Professor Mamuka Tavkhelidze was elected as a full member and consultant of Oxford Round Table.
  • 2004 - The University successfully passed the state accreditation with the highest estimation. It 13,6 times exceeds the established standards in all parameters.
  • 2004 - Distance learning programme in English Composition, Terrorism, American Government and Political Environment was implemented with the University of Georgia (USA). 75 percent of the project was financed by the American side. The project coordinators from America were Professor Sylvia McLawrine and Vanessa Holt. After the students completed the course, the Public Affairs Officer of the US Embassy in Georgia, Ms Rowena Cross-Najaffi presented them the international certificates.
  • 2004 - The University signed the agreement with Switzerland University according to which students can be sent on Bachelor's and Master's programmes in tourism and business administration. They can take a complete or incomplete course.
  • 2005 - The University received the letter from His Excellency the US President Mr. George Bush in which he expresses his gratitude towards Grigol Robakidze University for publishing the book “Ten Federalist Papers in Georgian” which was presented to him on his visit to Georgia.
  • 2005 - The University received the letter from the Secretary of States Ms Condoleezza Rice in which she greatly appreciates the book “Ten Federalist Papers in Georgian” published by the University and expresses her gratitude towards the Rector and the editors for presenting this book to her on her visit to Georgia.
  • 2005 - The agreement was signed with Cambridge International College (UK) on the base of which distance learning educational programme in different fields is implemented at Grigol Robakidze University. It considers both certificate and diploma programmes.
  • 2005 - Within the scope of Fulbright programme, Professor of Nebraska University (USA), senior Fulbright specialist Beverly G. Merrick delivered master class, lectures, seminars and presentation in Mass Communication for 6 weeks. Broadcast Journalism and Public Administration students participated in the project who were awarded the certificates after completing the whole cycle of the course. The project was financed by the US State Department. The student newspaper “THE HOME” was issued at Nebraska University. Works of our University students were published in this newspaper.
  • 2005-2006 - The project implemented with the financial support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Georgia “The Programme of Civil Education of Youth in the Field of Human Rights” was implemented. The text-book “The International Law of Human Rights” was published within the scope of the project.
  • 2006 - The University was awarded the state accreditation for the second time. It got the highest quota of the contingent among the private institutions -333 students.
  • 2006 - Students of Grigol Robakidze University participated in the Conference “The Foundations of Culture” held by the Neuwaldegg Institute (Austria). The project was financed by the Neuwaldegg Institute.
  • 2006 - The Government of Georgia discussed “the outcomes of the state certification and the unified post-diploma qualification exams”. It was ascertained that according to the level of preparing dentists, Grigol Robakidze University occupies the first rating place among the state and private higher educational institutions of Georgia.
  • 2006 - The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia published the publication of Alexander von Humboldt Fund (Germany) where is indicated that Grigol Robakidze University is listed in the World List of Universities (the World University Catalogue) and is recognized in Germany.
  • 2006 - The educational programme in Management and Adminsitration based on the programme of St. John's College of Annapolis (USA) started functioning at Grigol Robakidze University. St. John's College is considered as one of the best universities in liberal education and is the official partner of the programme of St. John's New Gelati Academy. Teaching of management, administration and leadership is bease on the opproach of liberal education which is the main for of Baccalaureate in the United States of America. The language of instruction is English, but Georgian literature, history and Orthodox theology are taught in Georgia.
  • 2006 - The scientific-practical conference “The Issues of Research of Crime, Its Causes and the Way of Avoiding Crime”, dedicated to the fifth anniversary of establishing the Centre for Study and Prediction of Crime was held at the University.
  • 2007 - The project “Youth against Violence” was implemented at the University. The project was financed by the United States Department.
  • 2008 - The University starte implementation of unprecedented project - admission of students on Georgian-British-Hungarian programme. This means that students will get the academic degrees and diplomas of Oxford Brookes University and Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2007 - Students’ Scientific Conference was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2007- 2008 - The research project “The Federalist Papers and the Problems of Civil Education in Georgia” was implemented at the University. The project was financed by the US Embassy in Georgia.
  • 2008 - Grigol Robakidze University signed the agreement with Bukovyna State Finance Academy (Ukraine) which considers different types of scientific-research collaboration.
  • 2008 - Joint seminars of students and professors of St. John's College of Annapolis (USA) and Grigol Robakidze University Academy “New Gelati” were held at the University. The project was financed by the American non-governmental organization “OLEG” (Organization for Liberal Education in Georgia).
  • 2008 - The International Scientific Conference “Criminology - Reality and Perspectives” was held at Grigol Robakidze University in which participated the Executive Director of the US Association of Criminologists, Professor of Nebraska University - Lincoln Chris Eskridge.
  • 2008 - The International Scientific Conference “Neo-Platonism and Modernity” was held at Grigol Robakidze University. Besides the representatives of different universities of Georgia, the representatives of St. John's College (Annapolis, USA) participated in the conference.
  • 2008 - Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Medicine was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2008 - Students’ Scientific Conference was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2008 - On the basis of the agreement with the International Business School in Budapest (Hungary), students of the Faculty of Business and Management passed one-year course at the mentioned higher educational institution.
  • 2008 - Grigol Robakidze University became the full member of ELFA - European Law Faculties Association. This enables the university to participate in conferences and seminars held by this association and be its privileged partner in projects.
  • 2008 - The University signed the agreement with the international organization STUDDEX what gives students the opportunity to register on the special web-page.   • 2008 - The University extended its international cooperation. It started impelmentation of Georgian-Ameran programme what implied studying at Grigol Robakidze University and at the same time at Jones International University (USA) in online regime. After completing the programme, students will get the academic degrees and diplomas of Grigol Robakidze University and Jones International University.
  • 2008 - Students’ and professors’ international mobility system started functioning at the University. The joint seminar together together with Bachelor students and professors of St. John's College of Annapolis (USA) was held at Grigol Robakidze University. The programme lasted one month and included cultural events.
  • 2009 - The International Scientific Conference “War and Peace Journalism” was held at Grigol Robakidze University. The organizers of the conference were Grigol Robakidze University and the Caucasian Center for Proposing Non Traditional Methods of Conflict Resolution (Armenia).
  • 2009 - English language specialist Ms Jennifer Herrin (USA) held professional development seminars in methodology of teaching Business English for lecturers of Grigol Robakidze University. She also led a course of Business English for students of our University. The project was financed by the US Department of State. The project was administered by the Public Affairs Office of the US Embassy to Georgia.
  • 2009 - Grigol Robakidze University together with the Centre for Study and Prediction of Crime, with the assistance of “People’s Harmonious Development Society” conducted round table “Woman and Criminality” in the hotel Ambassador. The project was accomplished with the financial support of European Union.
  • 2009 - The first joint scientific Conference of Grigol Robakidze University and the Young Georgian Dentist's Society was held at the University.
  • 2009 - Students’ Scientific Conference was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2009 - Grigol Robakidze University and St. John's College (USA) accomplished the joint educational summer programme “Athens and Jerusalem”. The project was financed by the American non-governmental organization “OLEG” (Organization for Liberal Education in Georgia).
  • 2009 - Berlin Free University (Germany) in cooperation with Grigol Robakidze University conducted the International Seminar in Conflict Simulation in Caucasus in Tbilisi and Bakuriani. The coordinators of the seminar were Berlin Free University (Germany) and Grigol Robakidze University. The project was implemented by the financial support of DAAD. Students from Azerbaijan and Armenia also participated in the project.
  • 2009 - The International Scientific Conference “The Problems of Caucasus in the Past, Present and Future” was held at Grigol Robakidze University. The organizers of the conference were Grigol Robakidze University (Georgia), Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Georgia), House of Free Opinion (Georgia) and the Caucasian Center for Proposing Non Traditional Methods of Conflict Resolution (Armenia).
  • 2009 - The International Scientific Conference “Platonism, Aristotelianism and Neo-Platonism in Medieval and New Periods” dedicated to the world day of philosophy was held at Grigol Robakidze University. Well-known German scholars Burkhard Mojsisch and Helmet Schneider participated in the conference.
  • 2009 - International Seminar “Anthropological Constants in Hegel’s Philosophy of Right: Self - Personality - Property - Freedom” was held at Grigol Robakidze University. The seminar was conducted by German scholar, Professor Helmet Schneider.
  • 2009 - On the basis of the agreement with the International Business School in Budapest (Hungary), students of the Faculty of Business and Management passed one-year course at the mentioned higher educational institution.
  • 2009 - Students International Festival of Publicistic TV Programmes and Documentaries “Centaur” was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2009 - Grigol Robakidze University participated in the International Business Forum organized by the Office of State Minister for Diaspora Issues.
  • 2009 - Grigol Robakidze University signed the memorandum of cooperation with the University of Szczecin (Poland).

  • 2009 - USAID project “The Energy Capacity Initiative   Project” (ECI) was implemented on the Faculty of Business and Management.
  • 2009 - The University signed the agreement with the international organization AIESEC on the base   of which Grigol Robakidze University students have the opportunity to pass internship in different countries of Europe and America.
  • 2009 - The agreement was signed with Heidenheim University (Germany) which considers sending outstanding students of the Faculty of Business and Management to the mentioned University for one semester. After completing the course, students will be awarded certificates. Tuition is financed by the German side. The German side will also give each student scholarship of 400 EURO.
  • 2009 - The agreement was signed with the University of Scranton on the base of which Grigol   Robakidze University students, after winning the contest, have the opportunity to pass the three-week course in Human Resources Management in the University of Scranton. After completing the course, they will be awarded certificates.
  • 2009 - The University started implementation of a new type project, the so-called integrated programme. It implies sending Broadcast Journalism students to Hove College (England) where they will get additional qualification of PR manager. The diploma will be issued by Grigol Robakidze University recognizing the credits accumulated at Hove College.
  • 2009 - The University started implementation of Liberal-American programme which is analogue of the “Bachelor’s Academic Programme in Liberal Art”. This programme is unique in its essence. The programme is multidisciplinary and comprises five trends - law, economics, management, social-political disciplines and disciplines of natural sicences.
  • 2009 - Presentation of the project “The Federalist Papers” was held at the USA Embassy. The project was financed by the Embassy. The University presented 600 page work that comprises translation of 85 articles of the founder fathers of America - Alexandre Hamilton, Hames Medison and John Jay; it also included rather original commentaries. The work concerns the USA Constitution. The USA Ambassador to Georgia, Mr. John Tefft opened the presentation. He highly estimated Grigol Robakidze University professors’ work.   • 2010 - Grigol Robakidze University team participated in the Central and Eastern Moot Competition which was held in Sofia (Bulgaria).  
  • 2010 - The Faculty of Business Management of Grigol Robakidze University signed the agreement with the Professor of Nebraska University - Lincoln (USA) L. Joe McNulty. The agreement considers cooperation in different spheres.
  • 2010 - Greigol Robakidze University signed the agreement with the Professors of Nebraska University - Lincoln (USA) Ronald G Joekel, Richard Edwards and Richard Torraco. The agreement considers involvement of these Professors in the Dissertation Board of the Faculty of Business and Management as full members.
  • 2010 - Broadcast Journalism students of Grigol Robakidze University participated in the International Arhavi Culture & Art Festival (Turkey) and won the first prize for making the best documentary. The project was organized and finances by Archavi Municipality and the Festival Committee. The project organizers sent the letter of gratitude to the Rector of Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2010 - Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management, Professor Murtaz Kvirkvaia won JFDP American Councils Alumni grant “Methodology for creation of university’s strategic development plan”.
  • 2010 - The scientific-research project “Alexis De Tocqueville” was implemented in the Research Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the University. The project was financed by the US Embassy in Georgia.
  • 2010 - The International Symposium dedicated to Grigol Robakidze's 130th Anniversary “Criminological Aspects of Fight against Criminality” was held in Hotel “Diplomat”. The organizers of the Symposium were Grogol Robakidze University, the Office of State Minister of Georgia for Diaspora Issues and Max Plank Institute of Foreign and International Criminal Law (Germany).
  • 2010 - The International scientific conference dedicated to Grigol Robakidze's 130th anniversary was held in Hotel “Sheraton Metekhi Palace”. The organizers of the Conference were Grogol Robakidze University and the Office of State Minister of Georgia for Diaspora Issues.
  • 2010 - On the basis of the agreement with the International Business School in Budapest (Hungary), students of the Faculty of Business and Management passed one-year course at the mentioned higher educational institution.
  • 2010 - The International Scientific Conference “New Scientific-Research Projects in Philosophy” dedicated to the World Day of Philosophy was held at Griogol Robakize University. The organizer of the Conference was the Research Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Grogol Robakidze University.
  • 2010 - Students II International Festival of Publicistic TV Programmes and Documentaries “Centaur” was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2010 - The Round Table “The Role of Criminology in the State and Society“ was held at the University organized by Grigol Robakidze University Centre for Study and Prediction of Crime and the International Juridical Centre.
  • 2010 - The First Scientific-Practical Conference “Internal Displaced Persons from Abkhazia: Social and Health Care Problems” was held at the University.
  • 2010 - With the initiative of Grigol Robakidze University Juridical Clinic and the Centre for Study and Prediction of Crime the Students’ Scientific Conference “Modern World Order - Criminality and Criminal Organizations” was held in the Conference hall of the University.
  • 2010 - The Faculty of Medicine of Grigol Robakidze University held the Students’ Scientific Conference on the topic “Actual Issues of Modern Medicine”.
  • 2010 - Students’ Scientific Conference was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2010 - The International Scientific Conference dedicated to Merab Mamardashvili's 80th Anniversary was held at Griogol Robakize University. The organizer of the Conference was the Research Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Grogol Robakidze University.
  • 2010 Grigol Robakidze University became the official representative of West London College in Georgia. The agreement considers sending students on Bachelor's and Master's programmes in business administration, finances, marketing, and tourism.
  • 2010 - The University signed the agreement with London School of Business and Finance (Great Britain) according to which students can be sent on Bachelor's and Master's programmes in business and finances.
  • 2010 - The University signed the agreement with Arkansas State University and Grigol Robakidze University became the authorized representative of the latter. According to the agreement students can be sent on Bachelor's and Master's programmes in business, journalism and linguistgics.
  • 2011 - Bachelor programme students of the Law School of Grigol RobakidzeUniversity participated in the Conference held by European Law Students' Association Prague (ELSA Prague) which took place at Prague Charles University (Czech Republic). The conference concerned health law. The University partially financed the students’ participation.
  • 2011 - International Scientific Symposium “Prevention of Postoperative Relapses and Remote Metastases of Malignant Tumours of External and Internal Organs” was held at Grigol Robakidze University. During the symposium was used the method of Dr. of Medical Science, Active Member of American, European and Asian, Scientific Academy, laureate of UNO, Honorary Professor of Grigol Robakidze University Shalva Mardi.
  • 2011 - Grigol Robakidze University, Georgian University of St. Andrews and Georgian-American Cultural Centre “Amirani” held the international scientific conference “Goderdze Chokheli - Creative Work without Boundaries”.
  • 2011 - The International Scientific Conference “Thinking in the Epoch of Global Changes” was held at the University.
  • 2011 - The International Scientific Conference dedicated to the World Day of Philosophy was held at Griogol Robakize University. The topic of the conference was: “Learning -Teaching - Research. Reform of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Hard Burden of the Soviet Heritage and the Difficulties of the Transformation Process”.
  • 2011 - The Scientific-Practical Conference “National Security and Organized Crime” was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2011 - Students’ Interuniversity Scientific was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2011 - Grigol Robakidze University team participated in the Central and Eastern Moot Competition which was held in Vilnius (Lithuania).
  • 2011 - The scientific-research project “Thomas Paine “Common Sense” (Georgian translation with research and remarks)” was implemented in the Research Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the University. The project was financed by the US Embassy in Georgia.
  • 2011 - Giorgi Tavadze, the scientific worker and Assistant Professor of the Research Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Grigol Robakidze University, won the Herzog August Library scientific-research scholarship (Wolfenbüttel, Germany). He left for Germany to work in the Centre for Renaissance and Modern Period Thinking Studies for three months.
  • 2011 - The Black Sea International Scientific Symposium in Medical Law was held at Grigol Robakidze University. Together with the scholars of Grigol Robakidze University and other Georgian colleagues, the representatives of the Scientific Academy of foreign countries (Germany, Turkey, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Rumania) participated in the symposium.
  • 2011 - Within the scope of the agreement between Grigol Robakidze University and the International Youth Organization AIESEC Georgia students of the School of Business and Management passed internship in Central and Eastern Europe.

  • 2011 - The research project “Devitalizing Cancer Tissue Intraoperatively and Preventing Dissemination of Cancer Cells by Using the Product “Mardil” - “Let’s Defeat Cancer” was implemented at the University.
  • 2011 - Within the scope of the agreement between Grigol Robakidze University and the International Youth Organization AIESEC Georgia students of the School of Business and Management passed two-month internship in China.
  • 2011 - By the decision of the Autharization Board for Educational Institutions, starting from 2012 to 2013 Grigol Robakidze University was awarded the status of higher educational institution and authority of implementing additional professional educational programme for 5 years. Contingent of Grigol Robakidze University increased up to 2000 students.
  • 2011 - By the decision of the Accreditation Board for educational programmes, one-stage programme of Doctor of Dental Medicine, Bachelor programme in Sociology, Bachelor programme in Journalism and Mass Communication, Bachelor programme in Philosophy, Bachelor programme in English Philology, Bachelor programme in Law, Bachelor programme in Business Administration (Georgian-British-Hungarian), Bachelor programme in Business Administration (Georgian-German), Bachelor programme in Business Administration (Finances), Bachelor programme in Tourism and the fourth-stage professional programme in Broadcast Reporter of Grigol Robakidze University were awarded accreditation.
  • 2012 - International Round Table dedicated to establishing the Caucasian Centre for Crime Prevention and Comparative Criminology was held at Grigol Robakidze University.
  • 2012 - International Scientific Conference “Legal and Penitentiary Reforms in Georgia: Comparative Analysis and European Experience” was held at Grigol Robakidze University. The organizer was Caucasian Research Centre for Crime Prevention and Comparative Criminology of Grigol Robakidze University and Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law.
  • 2012 - Presentation of Academician Guram Tevzadze's new book “History of New Philosophy. Part II: From Immanuel Kant to Friedrich Nietzsche” and the International Scientific Conference dedicated to this work was held at Grigol Robakidze University.   • On September 6–7, 2018, the University hosted 40 scholars and students from Georgia, Turkey, Jordan, Azerbaijan and the Middle East for the eighth time. The conference participants presented the results of their research in the fields of medicine, law, business, tourism and shared their experiences at the conference.   • Oqtomber 2018. By the decision of the Academic Committee of Grigol Robakidze University, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to Georgia, His Excellency Pascal Monier, was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor for his contribution to the development of cultural and educational cooperation between Georgia and France.

Muhammad Ketata, Regional Director for Eastern and Central Europe of the Agency (AUF), visited the University. The university's faculties are situated on David Aghmashebeli #13, in the downtown of Tbilisi, Georgia and includes a new building located near US Embassy in the suburb of Tbilisi.
