Hand Rolled Cigarette is a 2020 Hong Kong crime drama film written and directed by Chan Kin-long in his directorial debut, and starring Gordon Lam as a retired colonial-era soldier who takes in a troubled South Asian youth (Binpin Karma). The film opened the 17th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival on 3 November 2020,[1] and also closed the 57th Golden Horse Film Festival on 19 and 20 November 2020, where it was nominated for seven awards including Best Feature Film.[2][3]

Plot

Retired soldier Kwan Chiu (Gordon Lam) who served in the British colonial army has joined the triads to make a living, but he has been suffering financially in recent years. One day, Kwan meets a young South Asian thief, Manny (Binpin Karma) in Chungking Mansions, who offers Kwan HK$1 million to take him for five days in for five days in which Kwan agrees. The two men bond and re-discover themselves when they realize they are both remnants of a colonized colonial past. On the other hand, Kwan has earlier had set up a smuggle trade between triad leader Big Mouth Tai (Ben Yuen) and Taiwanese triad leader Tsai-pu (To Yin-gor), but the goods Tai received end up being different from what he was shown and demands Kwan to return a sum HK$1.5 million deposit. Manny gives Kwan a bag of stolen drugs for him to pay the debt. Just as the problem seems to have resolved, Manny was abducted by Tai's underlings and Kwan must decide whether to flee for his own safety or risk his life to save his newfound friend. Kwan takes a smoke of a hand rolled cigarette before making his final decision.

Production

Supported by the Hong Kong First Feature Film Initiative (FFFI),[4] Hand Rolled Cigarette began production in March 2020 in Hong Kong and was the only film in production when the film industry was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] As a result, Lam did not receive any salary for acting in the film to support the local film industry.[1] The film held its blessing ceremony on attended by the cast on 20 June 2020 at the Kuichong Subdistrict in Shenzhen.[6] Production for Hand Rolled Cigarette officially wrapped up on 12 August 2020 .[7]

Release

Hand Rolled Cigarette made its world premiere as the opening film of the 17th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival on 3 November 2020.[1] The film also closed the 57th Golden Horse Film Festival on 19 November 2020 and competed in its award ceremony.[2]
