History
The college was established in 1941 by the Negombo Dharmadutha Association. The college was named as a tribute to Walisinghe Harischandra who was born in the village. Establishing the college on 4 January 1942 fulfilled the requirement for a Buddhist High School in Negombo.
The land was gifted by C. L. A. de Silva. The land was in front of Anghurukaramulla Bhodirajarhama Temple. The name "Harischandra School" was proposed by member H. W. Amarasuriya. It started with five children housed in a cojan roof building. As a tribute to Harischandra, from an idea of businessman Nial Ranasinghe, a statue was commissioned. On 12 February 1993, on the day of the Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary) of the school, a statue of Harischandra was erected in front of the school and declared open by the President, Dingiri Banda Wijetunga.
The school is 1 km (0.62 mi) from city centre. It enrolls grade 1 to 13. 4756 students are enrolled, including 2,924 boys and 1,832 girls and educated by 148 teachers. Classes are held in both Sinhala and English. The school became a National School in Negombo Town. The principal is D. D. Keerthi de Alwis.
