The album is named after the track "Hey Eugene", a fan favorite at the band's live concerts. As with most Pink Martini albums, Hey Eugene! features lyrics in several languages: French, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, and English. The song Bukra wba’do, meaning ‘tomorrow and the day after’ in Arabic, describes a lover's anticipation of a first date.

Hey Eugene! debuted at number 30 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 19,000 copies in its first week.[4] As of 2009 it has sold 140,000 copies in United States according to Nielsen SoundScan.[5] It was certified platinum in France by the UPFI in 2013.[6] In 2014 it was awarded a diamond certification from the Independent Music Companies Association,[7] which indicated sales of at least 200,000 copies throughout Europe.[8] Worldwide it has sold over 350,000 copies.[9]
