Hope Collection of Pictures

The Hope Collection of Pictures, also known as The Hope Collection of Pictures of the Dutch and Flemish Schools, was a distinguished group of eighty-three paintings that were sold together in 1898 by Lord Francis Pelham Clinton-Hope.[1][2] It included works by more than thirty different artists, a number of them being individuals whose names are renowned within art history.[3]

History

These paintings were part of a larger art collection that was built up by multiple members of the Hope family.[2] At the time when the Dutch Republic was nearing its end, their collection was brought to England.[2] A number of the Dutch and Flemish paintings were subsequently inherited by Henry Thomas Hope,[2] who would later contribute a total of twelve paintings to the 1857 Manchester Art Treasures exhibition.[4] In 1891 the eighty-three paintings were put on display at the South Kensington Museum,[5] before they would be sold seven years later for the sum of £121,550.[2] The payment of this amount was made by the London art dealer Asher Wertheimer.[2]
