Ilie Oană

Ilie Oană (16 August 1918 – 27 April 1993) was a football player and manager who represented and coached the Romania national football team.

Career

Oană was born in Indiana Harbor to Romanian parents who emigrated from Transylvania before the outbreak of World War I. In 1921, his parents moved back to their homeland, settling in Sibiu after the 1918 Union of Transylvania with Romania. Oană began his football career with local side Șoimii Sibiu. He joined Petrolul Ploiești in 1937.[2] Because he was born in the United States, he was nicknamed "Americanul" (The American).[1][3]

Oană made two appearances for Romania, making his debut in a friendly which ended 2–2 against Hungary in October 1939.[4][5][6] He also played in a 0–0 against Poland at the 1948 Balkan Cup.[4][7]

After he retired from playing, Oană became a football coach. He managed most of his career Petrolul Ploiești and he also had an experience outside the country at the Greek Superleague side Panserraikos.[1][3][8] He won two Romanian league and one Romanian Cup titles with Petrolul and a Romanian Cup with Universitatea Craiova.[1][3][9] Oană has a total of 572 matches as a coach in Liga I, which makes him the second coach with the most matches in the league, behind Florin Halagian who has 878.[10] The Ilie Oană Stadium from Ploiești is named in his honor.[11]
