Plot
The film follows the response of the Chinese and American governments to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Production
Nanfu Wang initially set to make out a short film about the Chinese government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic after her son was left with her mother while Wang went to work on another project, as COVID spread Wang became worried and started looking for information, with the majority being false. She began contacting cinematographers in Wuhan, China and realized the stories of the pandemic made it important to be a feature film instead, and began incorporating the American response to the pandemic after seeing the government spread misinformation.[1] HBO Documentary Films came on board to produce and distribute the film.[2]
Release
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021.[3][4]
Critical response
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 95% based on reviews from 21 critics, with an average rating of 8.80/10.[5]
