Inunaki Dam

Inunaki Dam (犬鳴ダム, Inunaki damu) is a dam in Miyawaka, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It was completed in 1994.[1]

There used to be a small village in the area called Inunaki, hence the name. The first evidence of settlements in the valley was in 1691, and the peak of its population was in 1839 with a population of 143 people. There used to be a branch elementary school in the village, but it was closed in 1966 due to the lack of students and staff. It was merged with Yoshikawa village in 1889 and once again with Miyawaka in 1955. The village's old bridge called Shimotanibashi can be seen when the water level of the dam is low, but the completion date of this bridge is unknown as the date has since been worn off by the dam.[2]

There is an urban legend concerning the village that once stood in the area of the dam. It is said that when you enter the tunnel that used to enter the village you will see a sign that warns visitors about the danger of the village. Japanese laws are powerless and you can be killed, and the villagers have been driven crazy by outsiders and inbreeding. This urban legend has been proven to be fake, as the village is literally submerged by a dam. [3]

In 2000 a corpse of a man was found near the dam, burned by teens when he refused to give them money.
