In 1996, he quit his father’s party Awami Tehreek (Rahu group) and joined Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N).[4][3]
He was re-elected to the Provincial Assembly of Sindh as a candidate of PML-N from Constituency PS-49 (Badin-IV) in 1997 Pakistani general election. He was arrested following the 1999 Pakistani coup d'état and was jailed for two years.[5][3] In June 2001, he was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on corruption charges.[6] The NAB had charged him for importing liquor from Rawalpindi to Karachi on bogus import permits, issued by the Sindh Ministry of excise and taxation which caused a loss of Rs 66 million to the provincial exchequer. In June 2002, the NAB fined him of Rs 20 million and sentenced him for seven years rigorous imprisonment. He was also disqualified from holding public office for 10 years.[7] In May 2003, The Sindh High Court overturned his conviction after Rahoo filed an appeal to challenge his sentence.[6]
