Jack Lohman

Jack Lohman holds an honours degree in art history from the University of East Anglia and a master's degree in architecture from the University of Manchester. He was awarded scholarships to study architecture at the Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Warsaw. He has received honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster (2008), the Polish University Abroad, London (2009), and the University of East Anglia (2012).[5]

He is professor of Museum Design and Communication at the Bergen Academy of Arts and Design (appointed 1997), Vice President of the Canadian Museums Association (elected 2017) and Executive Board member of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (appointed 2014).

He was Chief Executive of Iziko Museums, South Africa (1999-2002), an organization consisting of fifteen national museums including the South African Museum and the South African National Gallery,[6] and Director of the Museum of London (2002–12).[7][8] He delivered and opened the Museum of London Docklands in 2004.

He has assisted museums around the world and his work has been recognised with numerous awards and distinctions. He was Chairman of the National Museum in Warsaw (2008–13). He was appointed Commander of British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2012.[9] He has received state honours from Poland, Colombia and Rwanda. He is a former Chairman of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) United Kingdom (2002–08) and member of the Culture Committee of the UK National Commission to UNESCO and the Canadian Commission to UNESCO.

Lohman is a senior editor of Museum Worlds, Berghahn Books. He was Editor in Chief of UNESCO's publications series ‘Museums and Diversity’.

He has written a number of books most recently Museums at the Crossroads (2015)[10][11] and Treasures of the Royal BC Museum (2016).[12]

His hobbies are languages (9 fluent languages) and chess. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
