Umaga comes from a strong rugby family. His father Mike Umaga won 13 caps for Samoa, his uncle Tana Umaga played 74 times for New Zealand and captained the All Blacks, and his father's cousin was the late Jerry Collins.[2]

Umaga was born in Halifax, educated at Kenilworth School and Sports College, and played for England U-18 and U-20. [3] He represented Hinckley RFC in National 2 North in the 2016/17 season scoring 5 tries in 11 appearances, including a superb individual try at Preston Grasshoppers. He also showed himself to be an impressive goal kicker during this period and switched regularly between Fly - Half and 12/13.

Umaga received his first call up to the senior England squad on 20 January 2020 for the 2020 Six Nations Championship.[4]
