By the time this road received its name in 1959, the vicinity was already acknowledged as Kampung Ma'arof. Information extracted from street naming documents presents the person behind this name to be Ma'arof bin Malim (died 1944), who was an employee at the Bungsar Electric Power Station and presumably the headman of the village.
