Jessica Miranda

Jessica E. Miranda is an American politician and businesswoman who is the member of the Ohio House of Representatives from the 28th district in Hamilton County. The district consists of Madeira, Forest Park, Blue Ash, Sycamore, Sharonville, Evendale, Reading, and Montgomery. Miranda represents over 116,000 residents [2]

Prior to her election to the Ohio House, Miranda served as President of the Winton Woods City School District[3] and she served on the Economic Development Commission for the City of Forest Park.[4] She is a board member of the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce.[5]

Early life and career

Miranda is a public school graduate and attended Talawanda High School near Oxford, Ohio. Miranda is a business owner that provides insurance to middle class and working families.[6] She holds numerous IRS certifications and is a licensed Property and is a Casualty Insurance Broker.

Ohio House of Representatives

Election

In the 2018 election, Jessica Miranda defeated incumbent Representative Jonathan Dever to win her seat in Ohio House of Representatives. Even though, in the 2016, Miranda lost her challenge to Dever 42.62% to 57.38%. On election night in 2018, Dever initially appeared to lead.[7] However, after the bipartisan Hamilton County Board of Elections counted provisional ballots as part of a closely watched recount, Miranda was declared the victor by a 56-vote margin.[8] This was the closest margin of victory of any state legislative campaign in Ohio.[9]

Representative Jessica Miranda serves on the following committees: Economic and Workforce Development, Higher Education, Insurance, and Transportation and Public Safety.[10]

Signature legislation

As a freshman representative, Miranda has also been the primary sponsor of three different bills; currently, her most high-profile legislation was HB240, a bill introduced to committee that promotes gun-safety in Ohio.[11] Those three bills are currently in committee and are listed below:

HB235: to designate the sugar cookie as the official State cookie of Ohio. A joint effort, co-sponsored by Representative Brigid Kelly. The bill was brought to the legislature by students in the 28th district who attend the All Saints Catholic School. The students conducted a project on how to get involved in the Legislative process and landed upon State named items like the state flower, juice, bird, etc. Students noticed that Ohio did not have a state cookie, and in the spirit of civic participation, asked Representative Jessica Miranda to introduce the bill.
HB 240: to prohibit negligent storage of a firearm and to provide criminal penalties if a minor gains access to an improperly stored firearm.
HB 241: designate a portion of Interstate Route 71 in Warren County as the "Veterans Suicide Memorial Mile."

Winton Woods Board of Education

Jessica Miranda was elected to the Winton Woods Board of Education in 2013 and served until 2018, during which time she served as Vice President, President, Legislative Liaison, Bond Levy Chairperson and in many other capacities. She received a Community Spirit Award for her "years of service" and "significant contributions"[12] to the Winton Woods City School District.

During her tenure on the Board of Education, the school district implemented a full day early childhood education program.[13] All three of her children currently attend school in the district.[14]
