Jim Mello

James Anthony Mello (November 8, 1920 - May 27, 2006) was an American football player who played three NFL seasons. He played for the Boston Yanks, Chicago Rockets, Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions. He also played for the AFL Paterson Panthers in 1950.

Early life

Jim Mello was born on November 8, 1920 in Riverport, Rhode Island. He went to high school at West Warwick (RI).

College career

Mello went to college at Notre Dame. In 1941 he did not play college football.[1] In 1942 he did play. Then in 1943 he had 137 rushing attempts for 713 yards.[2] From 1944 to 1945 he was in the United States Navy.[1] In 1945 he was drafted by the Boston Yanks in the 6th round (47) of the 1945 NFL Draft.[1] He returned to Notre Dame in 1946. He had 61 rushing attempts for 307 yards.[2] He also had 2 catches for 40 yards.

Professional career

Because he was drafted in 1945 by the Boston Yanks, he played for them in 1947. In 1947 he played 9 games and started 4.[3] He had 33 rush attempts for 62 yards. He also had 2 receptions for 26 yards.[3] In 1948 he played for 2 teams, the Chicago Rockets and Los Angeles Rams. He played 3 games for the Rams and 6 for the Rockets. In 1948 he had 57 rush attempts for 246 yards.[3] He also had 4 receptions for 55 yards. Then in 1949 he played for the Chicago Hornets (Rockets) and Detroit Lions. He played one with the Hornets and 10 for the Lions. Mello played defense for the Lions and had 3 interceptions for 61 yards. He also had 3 fumble returns for 25 yards. Then in 1950 Jim played with the AFL Paterson Panthers.

Later life

Jim Mello died on May 27, 2006 at the age of 85.
