History and concept

The annual multi-artist holiday season Jingle Ball concert was created by Top 40 radio station WHTZ in 1995. For the first 24 years, the concert was presented each year at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The annual December concerts replaced WHTZ’s annual ″birthday celebration″ summer concerts (1984-1993). The ″Jingle Ball″ concept and branding evolved from WHTZ's December 1994 ″Acoustic Christmas″ concert.

The inaugural ″Jingle Ball″ concert was held on December 15, 1995, at Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, NJ.[1] The lineup included:

KIIS-FM Jingle Ball also takes place in early-to-mid December and is produced by the Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM[2] Since 2000, the concert series has been staged at various venues around southern California including the Shrine Auditorium and Staples Center in Los Angeles, and the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Other Jingle Balls are hosted by iHeartMedia sister stations in other cities such as WHYI in Miami, WXKS in Boston, and WIOQ in Philadelphia.

The concert series is noted for featuring several marquee performers in a day-long series of sets. Often, noted celebrities are on hand to introduce each act. An edited broadcast of New York concert has been aired nationally for several years by The CW as part of their overall deal with iHeartMedia to carry concert event programming.

The traditional concert series will not occur in any venue in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic; a televised 'virtual' version of the concert will air on iHeartMedia's CHR stations December 10 and air on The CW on December 14, with its performers doing so from their homes or another outside venue.[3]
