Josué Pesqueira

Josué Filipe Soares Pesqueira (born 17 September 1990), known simply as Josué, is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a Midfielder for Israeli club Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Portugal national team.

This name uses Portuguese naming customs: the first or maternal family name is Soares and the second or paternal family name is Pesqueira.

Club career

Early career

Josué joined the Porto youth department at the age of nine. He started his professional career at Covilhã and Penafiel from the LigaPro.[1] In the 2010–11 season VVV was loaned out of the Eredivisie.[2]

In the summer of 2011 Josué was released from Porto with only two official appearances to his credit, both in the Taça da Liga.[3][4] In the 2011–12 season Josué signed with Paços Ferreira. On September 17, 2011, he made his full 90-minute away game in a 0–1 away loss to Nacional.[5] The 2012–13 season Josué made 23 appearances in the Primeira Liga, sharing the best season in the history of the club that managed to qualify for the Champions League after finishing in 3rd. This season he was voted the best young player.[6][7]

Josué agreed on a return to former side Porto on 29 May 2013, penning a four-year contract and moving alongside manager Paulo Fonseca.[8][9] On 10 August he won his first club honour, coming on as a substitute in a 3–0 win over Vitória de Guimarães in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, and scored his first goal for his new team a week later starting and netting through a penalty kick in a 3–1 win at Vitória de Setúbal.[10][11]

On December 24, 2014, the 2014–15 season Josué was loaned out for a year and a half to Bursaspor from Süper Lig. On August 30, Josué made his debut as he came on as a substitute in the 0–2 home loss to Galatasaray. In his first season at the club he helped the team reach the Turkish Cup final, notably contributing with a brace to a 3–2 group win at Samsunspor on 24 December 2014.[12] On January 26, 2016, Josué returned to his homeland and was loaned to Braga until the end of the season.[13] Later in the season he helped his team win the Taça de Portugal in penalty shoot-out.[14]

On August 23, Josué returned to the Süper Lig, joining Galatasaray on loan for the season.[15] On December 25, Josué scored his debut goal in a 5–1 home win over Alanyaspor six minutes after replacing Eren Derdiyok.[16]

In the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons he played for Osmanlıspor and Akhisar Belediyespor respectively, and experienced less successful seasons.[17][18] In the 2018–19 season, he reached the cup final with his team, but lost to Galatasaray. In the quarterfinals of the cup, he scored two goals in a 5–2 victory over Kasımpaşa.[19]

2019–20 Season

On September 13, 2019, Josué summed up his terms for two seasons in the Hapoel Be'er Sheva uniform in the Israeli Premier League.[20] On September 16, he officially signed with the club.[21] On October 5, Josué made his Be'er Sheva uniform debut in a 0–3 victory over Hapoel Haifa at the Sammy Ofer Stadium in the Israeli Premier League. On October 19, he assisted for the first time in the Hapoel Be'er Sheva uniform in a 2–1 victory over Ironi Kiryat Shmona at Turner Stadium in the Israeli Premier League, and scored his first goal in the game against Hapoel Hadera in a 0–1 victory over Hadera in the Israeli Premier League, and even led the team to win the second State Cup in its history, When he assisted and scored in the 0–2 victory in the cup final over Maccabi Petah Tikva.[22]

2020–21 Season

On August 27, 2020, Josué made his debut in the Hapoel Be'er Sheva uniform at a European factory against Dinamo Batumi. During the game he helped his team qualify for the next stage after scoring two goals in a 3–0 victory.[23] On 24 September Josué helped his team qualify for the playoffs of the Europa League with a goal and assist in a 3–0 win over Motherwell.[24] On 1 October Josué helped his team qualify to the group stage of the Europa League after scoring a goal in a penalty in a 1–0 win over Viktoria Plzeň.[25] On October 2, 2020 his team was drawn at Group C with Bayer Leverkusen, Slavia Prague and Nice.[26]

International career

Josué made his debut with the full side on 11 October 2013, playing 21 minutes in a 1–1 home draw against Israel for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.[27]

In the second leg of the play-offs against Sweden on 19 November, Josué extended his middle finger towards the opposing fans, while celebrating his country's qualification to the World Cup after the final whistle.[28]

Style of play

Due to his short stature, Josué has a lower centre of gravity than taller players, which gives him greater agility, allowing him to change direction more quickly and evade opposing tackles. Despite being physically unimposing, he possesses significant upper-body strength, which, combined with his low centre of gravity and resulting balance, aids him in withstanding physical challenges from opponents, in addition wisdom in his game contributes to the fact that he knows well how to use his body in order to win physical fights.

Josué is a Playmaker with excellent physical fitness and a technically fantastic ability with his left foot, a combination of these abilities makes him a quality player, so he seems to be in all parts of the field. His ability to deliver long, short and complex balls in such a precise way makes him a very significant player in building the game, whether it is open or crowded areas. At the same time his abilities to score from a distance with his left foot are impressive, especially when it comes to free kicks.
