When comparing to other armed forces, a junwi is generally rated as NATO pay grade OR-9. Junwi is a combined rank and exists in all branches of the South Korean armed forces. The insignia is annotated by a gold officer pip or, for the Republic of Korea Navy, a broken officer stripe.
To be a junwi is considered a tremendous honor in the Korean military, and those who obtain the rank typically hold more than thirty years of military service.
