Laksamana Hang Nadim were originally purchased by the Iraqi Navy as the Assad-class corvettes but their delivery was delayed and later cancelled because of international sanctions against Iraq following the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. She and her sister ship Laksamana Tun Abdul Jamil was purchased in October 1995 while another two corvettes were ordered in February 1997. Laksamana Hang Nadim was commissioned in July 1997. After served for a long time in Royal Malaysian Navy, it was confirmed that she and other sister ships will be upgrade to extend their service life. The upgrade consisted of missile launchers, sensors, combat management system and fire control radar.[3][4]
