Kamaraj College

Kamaraj College is one of the oldest and most reputed Arts & Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu. It is located in the southern city of Thoothukudi. It was established in the year 1966 by The Tuticorin Education Society. The College has been named after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu K. Kamaraj (Bharat Ratna Awardee) as a tribute to the invaluable service rendered by him to the nation, particularly to the cause of education. The college is affiliated with Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. The college offers different courses in Arts, Commerce and Science.

The College is run by the Tuticorin Educational Society, which also runs a Matriculation School within the college campus. The campus covers an extent of 50 acres, and lies within the heart of the city of Thoothukudi. The total campus strength is about 4,100 students.

The College and Society were founded by the late industrialist, Sri. AMMS Ganesa Nadar, Managing Director, The Tuticorin Spinning Mills Ltd, and Hindu Charitable organizations including Karapettai Hindu Nadar Sangam, for the noble purpose of upliftment of the Hindu community.

Five Pillars of Development

The institution focuses on bringing out the potential of its students through five identified pillars. The academic calendar of the college is structured to provide an opportunity for the students to display their talent and creativity. The five identified pillars are;

1. Academic Excellence: Innovative teaching methodology combined with rigorous tests are employed to prepare the students for excellence in end-semester University Examinations

2. Practical Knowledge: Real world knowledge is imparted via exposure to the various Conferences, Seminars & Workshops that are regularly organized by the respective departments of the College

3. Service to Nation: National pride and pride in oneself is inculcated through active participation in NCC and NSS programs. The College has full-fledged units of NCC Army Wing and NCC Naval Wing. Similarly, there are a number of NSS functioning units. Together, over 1100 students are enrolled in NCC and NSS programs in the College every year. Over 100 programs are conducted per annum.

4. Sports talent development: Four major sporting events are held in the college every year. They include inter-department tournaments and inter-college tournaments. Over 600 students participate in these events each year. Five outdoor sports and one indoor sport (Chess) are covered in these tournaments

5. Cultural talent development: Six major cultural events are organized by the college every year. Over 900 students participate in the various cultural events. Pongalovium is the major inter-college event held in January every year.

Major Events during the Academic Year

1. Academic Events

International, National and State-level Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and Exhibitions are organized by the various departments of the College every year. About 20 such major events are held per year by the individual departments

2. Celebrations

The college celebrates Independence Day, Republic Day, Pongal Day, Women’s Day and Founder’s Day with great pomp and show. Mini-cultural programs are generally held during these events celebrating the local tradition and culture

3. Sporting & Cultural Events

Four major Sporting and Cultural events are organized by the college every year. Tamaraparani Cup is the premier inter-departmental sports and cultural event of the college. It is held in September. Over 900 students participate in this extravaganza. Pongalovium is the premier inter-collegiate tournament organized by the students. Over 20 colleges participate in this event, in one of the biggest such events in Tamil Nadu. It is held in January.

Campus Placement

Campus Placement is an important avenue for career development of the students. About 250 students are placed via campus recruitment in the college. A wide range of reputed companies, from large Banking &Finance companies to ITES firms, Publishing companies to Core Manufacturing firms, visit the college every year for their requirements

Entrepreneurship Development

A Business Incubation Centre has been established to assist the students to develop their entrepreneurial traits and enable them to become entrepreneurs straight out of college. The Center is supported by the Faculty, Management and Alumini of the Institution. The Centre, located within the college premises, provides working space, meeting rooms and secretarial services and add-on support like legal services, technology and IP related services.

Kamaraj College has been developed and is fully established with six Academic blocks:

The buildings house the spacious Classrooms, fully-equipped Laboratories, Central Library, Research Library, Main Auditorium, Air-conditioned Seminar Halls, Conference halls, Research Centres of Excellence, Business Incubation Center and other facilities as per University and UGC mandates.

The College has Residential Hostels, separately for Boys and Girls with Comfortable Rooms, Dining Halls and Recreation Halls.

Sports Infrastructure include a full-sized Football Ground, Basketball Court, 2 Volleyball Courts, 2 Kho-kho Grounds and 4 Kabaddi Grounds

Accreditation

The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
