Geography

It is located at and around amaiyyiranjan thodu. This thodu (Water Channel) encircles the area of kannanmoola within its meander. The area within the meander of this thodu now turns out to be kannanmoola. Therefore, this is one of the low-lying areas of Thiruvananthapuram.and a flood plain of Amayiranjan thodu.[1]

History

Kannammoola is the birthplace of Chattambi Swamikal, one of the greatest scholar-saints of Kerala.[2] Originally owned by the Janmi Namboothiri family"Kolloor Athiyara Matom", the place was a stronghold of Nair families. Now many outsiders from all walks of life have settled here.

Velu Thampi Dalawa, the former Diwan of the Travancore Province, was hung by the British here. The Dalawa had committed suicide at Mannadi Temple, to avoid capture by the British.[3] The British brought his body to Thiruvananthapuram(Padippura veedu tharavadu and asked the karanavar to hang him and he slapped the body and allowed the body to be hung at the west end of his region which now belongs to the theological seminary)and attempted to disgrace his memory by having it hung atop a post at a hillock in Kannammoola (thereafter called 'Dalavakkunnu' and now part of the compound belonging to a theological seminary) to be devoured by birds of prey.
