Kebena

Kebena is one of the woredas in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia. This woreda is named after Kebena people. Part of the Gurage Zone, Kebena is bordered on the south by the Wabe River which separates it from Kokir Gedebano, Muhor Na Aklil, Ezha and Cheha, on the west by Abeshge, and on the north by the Oromia Region. It was part of former Goro woreda. The town of Welkite is surrounded by Kebena. It was part of the Islamic Sultanate of Hadiya [Kebena-Hadiya] or [Hadiya-Wombe] the Kebena are known for there religious wars [ Jihad ] were the fought a bloody battle in Jebdo against the Emperor Menelik I of Ethiopia led by there leader Hasan Enjamo who revived the Islam and Islamic sultanate after they felt and under the control of christian emperor. Hasan Enjamo a religious and fearful warior who is credited to have maintained the Islamic faith in southern region in Ethiopia. Hasan Enjamo even he fought in many battles he died on his way to one of the meetings while riding on his horse due to fatigue

Demographics

Based on the 2007 Census conducted by the CSA, this woreda has a total population of 52,379, of whom 26,231 are men and 26,148 women; none of the population were urban inhabitants. The majority of the inhabitants were reported as Muslim, with 89.52% of the population reporting that belief, while 8.22% practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, and 1.91% were Protestants.[1]
