Political career

Keria has worked in the different level of power in the Tigray Region from the district to regional level since 1988. She is one of the few women among the Tigray People's Liberation Front top leaders. Keria was Speaker of the House of Federation (HoF) from 6 May 2018 to her resignation on 9 June 2020.[2][7]

Keria was the only Muslim member of the TPLF, founding member of Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), Executive Committee.[1][8]

Resignations

Because of COVID-19 pandemic, the House of Federation postponed the national election that would have been held on 24 August 2020 (Ethiopian calendar). Following this, on 9 June 2020, Keria accused Abiy Ahmed's government as taking away the sovereignty of the country and resigned from her role as Speaker of HoF. She also added that she can not be an accomplice when the constitution is being violated, and a dictatorial government is being formed, and she has resigned not to be collaborator [with] such a historical mistake.[9][10]

Arrest warrant and detention

On 13 November 2020, during the Tigray conflict, the Federal Police Commission of Ethiopia issued an arrest warrant for Keria and 64 other senior members of the TPLF. According to the Federal Police Commission, Keria and her fellow members committed treason and were responsible for human rights violations and corruption.[11][12] On 1 December 2020, federal authorities stated that Keria had surrendered to the federal security forces in Mekelle, the capital city of Tigray Region.[13] On 16 January 2021, Keria appeared in court.[14][15]
