Geography

Kestřany lies approximately 6 kilometres (4 mi) south-west of Písek, 44 km (27 mi) north-west of České Budějovice, and 95 km (59 mi) south of Prague.

Kestřany lies on the Otava River. The National nature reserve Řežabinec a Řežabinecké tůně is located in the municipal area.

Etymology

The name Kestřany is probably derived from Kestra, which was the name of the first settler. His name has origin in kostra, meaning skeleton.[2]

History

The first written mention of the Horní tvrz Keep is from 1315, the first written mention of Kestřany is from 1338.[3]
