History

As evident from various PuYas including the Poireiton Khunthok Puya, Khuman Kangleirol Puya, Naothingkhong Phambal Kaba Puya and Thawanthaba Hiran Puya, the Khuman people were once a separate entity from the general Meitei ethnicity.[3]

According to the Poireiton Khunthok Puya, the Khuman people were the descendants of Prince Chingkhong Poireiton, who was a foreigner who came to the then Kangleipak kingdom along with his band of colonies, from the southern outskirts of the Manipur in the 1st century AD. Poireiton is said to be the founder of the Khuman dynasty.[4]

According to Naothingkhong Phambal Kaba Puya, Meitei prince Naothingkhong seek asylum to the kingdom of Khuman king, who married his daughter, the Khuman princess with him, in a condition that she would be the Meitei queen when he came to the Meitei throne.[5]

According to Thawanthaba Hiran Puya, the daughter of Meitei king Thawanthaba was exchanged with the daughter of the Khuman king, in the form of hand in marriage, to bring good relationship between the two ethnicities.[6]

The Khuman emperors ruled the present day Mayang Imphal region as their kingdom during their imperial days. However, during the reign of King Paikhomba of Ningthouja dynasty, the Khuman principality was merged under the general Meitei ethnicity, after which it attained the status of sub ethnic group (yek salai) of the newly merged ethnicity.[7]

Mythology

Khuman was the son of Iputhou Pakhangba and Loikhumpi Mawai Thoungailenpi . He was born inside Kangla Palace, Imphal at evening when sunset sky is somewhat dark in colour.
