The series is a realistic take on the romantic relationship between Dev and Sonakshi. The show mainly revolves around their love story and its impact on the unique, close bond between Dev and his mother, while exploring other family relationships.[3]

In January 2017, a seven-year leap was introduced.[4] Dev was shown to have transformed into a self-loving and carefree man, while Sonakshi had become a mature businesswoman and a single mother.[5]

The show originally ended on 24 August 2017. But in August 2017, the channel announced that the series would air extra episodes of Dev and Sonakshi's bonding with their newborn in September 2017.[6]

Plot

Season 1

Devrath "Dev" Dixit is a rich, self made businessman who lives in Delhi with his widowed mother Ishwari and three sisters Neha, Nikki and Riya. Neha is the eldest daughter, who has a strained relationship with her mother,as she feels Ishwari is partial towards Dev.

Sonakshi Bose is a nutritionist, hailing from a middle class Bengali family. Dev gets Sona fired from her job,and hires her as his mother’s personal nutritionist. Sona thus hates Dev, because she thinks Dev is a snobby, moneyminded businessman, but eventually she gets to know his past, and they slowly become friends.

Sonakshi soon starts falling for Dev,but hides it from everyone. Meanwhile, Dev’s marriage is arranged with Natasha Gujral, leaving Sona heartbroken.

Neha meanwhile, falls in love with Ranveer, and tells Dev about how it feels to be in love.Dev realises he feel S the same about Sona, and that he has fallen for Sona. He breaks the engagement with Natasha, and proposes Sonakshi. They start dating secretly.

Ishwari finds out about Dev and Sona’s relationship, and even though she likes Sona, she fears losing her son to Sona. Even after accepting their relationship, she feels discomfort, and falls ill. Seeing Ishwari’s health problems and discomfort about Sona, Dev breaks up with Sona.

Ishwari realises that Dev is still in love with Sona,so to end things, she indirectly sends a marriage proposal to the Bose family,of Ritwik. Dev soon finds out about Sona and Ritwik, and stalks them everywhere. He attends Sona and Ritwik’s engagement, gets drunk and creates a scene. Sona, unable to see Dev in this condition, drops him home.Seeing Sona’s love for Dev,Ritwik breaks the engagement.

Ishwari now realizes about Dev’s love for Sona, and so she allows Dev to marry Sona. Sona denies the proposal, but on Asha’s advice, she agrees to marry Dev. Sona and Dev are married happily.

Ishwari starts feeling insecure about Dev again A few complications arise as Neha and Ranveer, who got married prior to Dev, try to get divorced, and Neha feels insecure about Sonakshi. She starts hating Dev and Sona, because it reminds her of her failed marriage with Ranveer.

Ishwari's greedy sister in law, Radhrani, who stays at Dixit house with her entire family, wants her son Vicky to take over Dev's property. She hates Sona, and continually tries to create problems in her life.Vicky falls in love with Elena,Sona’s cousin, much to Radharani’s shock.

Riya and Ayan’s marriage is soon fixed, but Sona doubts Ayan for having an affair with someone else. Sona’s constant interference irritates Ishwari. The marriage is soon broken.

Ishwari thinks that Sona is pregnant, and starts to pamper her. Dev lies about Sona's pregnancy reports, and the fact that Sona has only 7% chance of conceiving. Ishwari takes both Dev and Sona to gynaecologist. On doctor's advice, Ishwari sends Dev and Sona for a trip to Shimla, and they soon get intimate.

Radharani and Vicky plot and tell Ishwari about a whooping loan which Dev has given to Sona's brother, Saurabh. When Dev and Sona return, a big fight breaks out between the Bose and Dixit families, in which Sona's father, Bijoy, bad mouthes Ishwari, which results into Dev slapping him. Sona's parents feel insulted and she leaves the Dixit house to be with her parents, while Radharani starts provokes Ishwari that Sona only cares for Dev's money and not Dev.

Sona returns to the Dixit house ,to pay back the loan that Dev gave Saurabh. Ishwari, devastated, asks Sona to get separated from Dev as this would bring back his happiness. Ishwari gets hurt as Dev and Sona break into a fight. Dev angrily tells Sona to get out of the house and never come back again.

Vicky takes the opportunity, gets Dev drunk, and takes Dev’s signatures on buying the Bose house.

Vicky arrives with police at the Bose house, telling them to vacate it. Sona goes to confront Dev, who in drunken state insults her. Deeply heartbroken by Dev's behavior, Sona decides to end her marriage.

Seven years later

Sona has become a successful businesswoman and lives in Kolkata, with her family and daughter Suhana "Soha". Dev has become a vagabond and doesn't obey his mother anymore, believing her and Sona to be cause of his misery. He is unaware of the presence of his daughter, and loves only his nephew Raunak "Golu".

Due to some business reasons, Sona shifts to Delhi and runs into Dev at an award function, who in return insults her and makes it clear as to how much he hates her.

Vicky sells half of Dev's office to Sona mistakenly and Dev fumes at learning this. However, Sona refuses to return the property and they both start working in same office.

Dev thinks Sona is in a relationship with her childhood friend, Jatin Roy and gets jealous. However, Jatin feels Sona and Dev still love each other and wants them to reunite.

Soha and Golu study in the same school and become good friends. Dev feels a strange attraction to Soha and soon finds out she is his daughter. He is angry with Sona for not telling him about his daughter, but Sona reveals that she came with the infant Soha to meet him, however, someone from his house didn't let them meet and told Sona to return. Ishwari accepts that it was her and Dev is heartbroken.

Dev meets Soha but she refuses to acknowledge him as her father and gives him example of Bijoy on how he is a good father to her mom, as he was always there for her. Dev decides to win Soha's heart and joins her at a summer camp, with the help of Golu. After seeing all the affections made by Dev, Soha accepts him as her father and expresses her wish of living with both her parents. Just for Soha's sake, Dev decides to live at Bose house for one week and Sona at Dixit house for next week.

Dev arrives in Bose house on first week. Although, a very quarrelling relationship with Bijoy; but Dev devolops a good bond with Sona's mother Asha. Dev also helps in all the arrangements of Saurabh's wedding and reveals to Asha (mistakenly), he was only worried for Sona all these years. This is when Asha and Saurabh realizes Dev still loves Sona.

After Saurabh's wedding, Sona arrives at Dixit house, and starts getting insulted by Radharani again. But this time, Sona says she is not Bahu of this family anymore, so she will not hasitate to teach her a lesson if she feels it.

Radharani feels Sona has came with the intention of getting back in Dev's life. She mixes some tablets in Dev's juice to know everything. Dev gets drunken, but is saved by Sona. In that drunken state, Dev admits that he still loves Sona and wants her back in his life, but the next day he refuses this confession. Sona tells him they're just good friends for Soha's sake.

Ishwari gets insecure on seeing Sona and Dev getting close, and has a heart blockage due to stress. But soon, she gets to know that Sona was actually helping Dev to get Ishwari rid of her long term blackmailer, Khatri. This brings a change in Ishwari and she starts liking Sona.

Ishwari realizes Dev can only be happy when he is with Sona and gets very adamant on bringing her son's happiness back to him. For this, she does a fake remarriage drama for Dev and tells Sona to choose a bride for him, thinking that she will refuse but she agrees and convinces Dev.

Ishwari gets worried when Dev agrees for remarriage, but soon, Dev reveals that he is just doing this drama to make Sonakshi jealous. Bijoy takes a promise from Sona that she will not return to Dev and this makes her stressed as she loves Dev as well.

Ishwari regrets of not behaving well with Sona earlier and requests her to stop Dev from remarrying, but Sona refuses of being in love with Dev.

Ishwari learns that Sona is surpassing her feelings for Bijoy's sake and requests him to not control his daughter like she did with her son and lost him.

Bijoy realizes Sona still loves Dev and allows them to reunite. Sona proposes Dev and they reunite. Sona returns to Dixit house. By now Dev understands how much she had suffered as a single mother and regrets insulting her earlier.

Sona learns that Dev lived alone all these years and didn't even attend any of his sisters wedding. Sona reunites him with his three sisters and Neha apologizes to them.

Dev saves Sona from a danger of getting gang raped, thereafter, he becomes extremely possessive and starts controlling her. This irks Sona and she gets into a big fight with Dev but soon they solve their problems and reunites.

Sona and Elina gets to know that it was actually Vicky who separated Devakshi. Elina encourage Sona to tell this to Dev but Sona fears that the family will fall apart again, therefore, she forgives Vicky. This brings a change in Radharani's heart and she apologizes to Sona for all her misdeeds.

But Dev soon finds about it and throws Vicky out of his house. Elina supports this decision until Dev slaps Vicky and she leaves the house along with Golu. This breaks Suhana's heart as she feels her parents are not giving her enough time and she had only one friend Golu. Dev and Sona realizes this and they lavishly celebrate Soha's birthday, where it is revealed, it was Vicky who was manipulating Soha all this while. But Dev decides to gift some property to secure Golu's future, and this brings a change in Vicky's heart.

Sona reveals that she is pregnant. Dev is very happy as he will get to live the moments he missed, but his happiness is short lived when Sona reveals she has life risk. Dev and Ishwari starts taking extra care.

After few months, Ronita (Saurabh's wife) gets into premature labor and nervous Saurabh calls Sona. Ronita gives birth to a baby girl named Mishti. But Sona goes into labor as well and gives birth to a healthy baby boy named Shubh.

Meanwhile, Vicky comes back and apologizes for all his misdeeds and season 1 ends on a happy note, with the entire family reunion.

Season 2

The second season primarily focuses on Dev and Sonakshi's equation with their new born son, Shubh.

Few months after Shubh is born; Sona decides to join office again but faces severe troubles in handling her children and office at the same time. Ishwari requests her to quit her job.

But Dev says he will quit his job instead and handle the children at home. He gives the office responsibility to Vicky.

Sona and Ishwari dislikes this idea first, but later decides to give one chance to Dev. Ishwari at first doesn't likes her son staying at home but later accepts his new job. Dev turns out to be very good at handling household chores.

Dev becomes a RJ and starts inspiring several other men in helping their wife. The show ends on a happy note with Shubh saying "Papa" and "Maa" for the first time.
