LAB University of Applied Sciences

LAB University of Applied Sciences (LAB) (Finnish: LAB-ammattikorkeakoulu) is a multidisciplinary institution of higher professional education in southern Finland. LAB is the sixth largest university of applied sciences in Finland with over 8 500 students.[2] LAB operates on two campuses: Lahti and Lappeenranta. The distance between these campuses is approximately 150 km.[3]

LAB University of Applied Sciences was established in 2020 when Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences merged.[2] The institution is an autonomous part of the LUT Group as a subsidiary of the LUT University.[4]

LAB is a regional centre of expertise with approximately 400 full-time teaching staff. Annually LAB employs about 70 part-time teachers from other academic institutions, business and industry.

Leadership

In 2021 Rector is Turo Kilpeläinen and Chairman of the Board is Juha-Matti Saksa.[5] Saksa is also Rector of the LUT University.[5][6]

Fields of Study

LAB operates in the fields of business and hospitality management, design and communication, social and health care, technology and engineering and technology. LAB has over 20 degree programmes with over 40 specialisation lines.

The bachelor's and master's degree programmes at LAB have been designed to respond to the demands and development needs of business and industry. Active collaboration with business, industry and other organisation are an integral part of studies.

Studies in English

Three Bachelor's degree programmes and two Master's degree programme are taught entirely in English. In addition, individual study modules and courses are available in English at faculties. Many courses, where instruction is not formally available in English, can be negotiated between the examiner and the student, especially in areas of art, design and music.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has decided to foreclose the Degree Programmes of Fine Arts, Music and Drama and also Tourism and Hospitality due to the structural development of Universities of Applied Sciences.

Student Union

LAB University of Applied Sciences has a very active student union, KOE. It has subdivisions at all of LAB faculties.

Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LAMK, Finnish: Lahden ammattikorkeakoulu) was an university of applied sciences located in Lahti, Finland. In 2015 LAMK had approximately 4 000 degree students and over 200 teachers.[7] At the time LAMK offered higher education, mainly bachelor’s degrees, in the fields of culture, business, social and health care, technology and tourism.[7] LAMK had six educational units: Institute of Design and Fine Arts, Institute of Music and Drama, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Social Health Care, Faculty of Technology and Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality.[7]

In July 2019 it was decided that Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (located in Lappeenranta) will be merged.[8] Decition was approved by the Finnish Government in October 2019 and the institutions were merged in January 2020 establishing the current LAB University of Applied Sciences.[8][2]
