Leo Shane III

Leo Shane III is an American journalist, and is the Capitol Hill and White House bureau chief for Military Times.[1]

Shane has covered Washington since 2004, focusing on military personnel and veterans policies.[2]

He is chairman[3] of the Executive Committee of Periodical Correspondents for the 115th Congress.

In January 2017, HillVets named Shane of its 100 of 2016 in the media category.[4]

Other honors:

• In 2009, Shane shared the George Polk Award for military reporting for coverage exposing the military's practice of profiling journalists in Afghanistan in an attempt to steer coverage of the war.[5]
• In 2011, Shane was named a Kiplinger Fellow[6] in public affairs journalism.

During a May 12, 2016, appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, host Rachel Maddow called Shane[7] "one of the best military and veterans reporters in the country.”

• In October 2016, Shane spoke with CNBC about how the military was forcing troops to repay enlistment bonuses.[10]
• In April 2017, Shane was on Newsmakers again, this time to interview VA Secretary David Shulkin.[11]

He previously worked at Stars & Stripes and is a 1998 graduate of the University of Delaware.
